Re: Insulated Boxcar Decals - sailormatlac - 09-01-2015

I'm actually bashing an old Front Range boxcar into a 40ft insulated boxcar.

I've been through many prototype photos and have a question. On many model, the heater is a small box under the door. Looking at this picture: http://www.cnrphotos.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=16404 it seems there's a box on each side (4 steel braces seems a little bit overdone for such a small apparatus. Is that right?

It seems I'll have to redo some details on that car.

Matt, studying the picture you have, I would have to say that it's just one box but if it is a heater it's made of some fairly heavy steel or even cast metal. That would explain the four steel straps holding it onto the bottom of the car.
Good work on the model.

Perhaps these detail photos from the museum at Delson-St. Constant will be of use:

Great Wayne! It confirms my custom-built detail was almost spot on. It also means the heater could be installed on any side of the car (left or right). I'm saying that because I see the Brake end of car on left and right. I'll tweak my detail a little bit and add the missing pipe. I think I should move the heater farther under the car.

A quick update about the modifications.

The car is now painted, I hope to start lettering it tomorrow when paint will be dry.

Hi Matt,

those are interesting looking cars and you made some great looking models. As the BC-Rail has some of those insulated boxcars, too it´s a nice inspiration if I ever want to build one or two of those cars.
The ´40 boxcar is also looking fine with those added details.

Thanks Chris,

I made a fourth and last insulated boxcar. It was an old Concor car. Logo and details were off.
