Charlie why/when did they take the other tunnel out of service? Todd Re: Railfanning Norfolk Southern RR - Charlie B - 02-19-2011 Todd, they took the tunnel out of service when they widened the other one for the second track. that was when they made the track to accommodate the double stacks, and I am guessing around 1995, I'm sure someone knows for sure and will post. I heard, and it could be true, that the track was left in place through the other tunnel so it could be opened in a hurry if it was needed. It doesn't have clearance for double stacks. It was cheaper to increase the width and height on just the one tunnel. Charlie Re: Railfanning Norfolk Southern RR - csiguy68 - 02-20-2011 thanks for the info. on the tunnel Charlie. Bill and i were talking about it the other day and couldnt remember what the story was with it. Todd Re: Railfanning Norfolk Southern RR - LiveSteamer - 02-21-2011 You are right Charlie. Im not sure if they left the track in there or not. If I remember correctly they also lowered the grade through there. That is a great picture. I can remember when the tunnels looked liked that. I was only in fifth grade when they did that to the tunnel. Re: Railfanning Norfolk Southern RR - cn nutbar - 02-26-2011 Rochester PA.
