I'm curious about the name "High Wheelers." Does it refer to the tall drivers used on steam engines in passenger service, or does it have to do with old time bicycles? Re: 2010 High Wheeler dates - BR60103 - 07-25-2009 Some versions of "Casey Jones" refer to him as "a right high wheeler of mighty fame". I still don't know what it means. Anything like a high roller? Re: 2010 High Wheeler dates - viperman - 07-25-2009 Russ, I've always figured it meant the drivers on a steam engine Re: 2010 High Wheeler dates - Sumpter250 - 07-26-2009 The first several responses on google, to the term "highwheeler" referred to bicycles. I believe the term, in railroading, started with the "American" 4-4-0, and evolved to any fast steam locomotive, usually having "larger" drivers, and has acquired the connotation of "speed". The NMRA Fox Valley Division, "Highwheelers" show, at Harper College, In Palatine,Il. is a good local show for the Chicago area. Trainfest, in Milwaukee, Wi. is considerably bigger. Re: 2010 High Wheeler dates - viperman - 03-07-2010 I took my 5yr old to the show yesterday, and we had a good time. I ended up taking 176 pictures, which include two of a passenger coach I bought, a couple of my son, and a few accidentals. |
