Steve you are amazing. I am drooling on myself waiting for the next installment....

That's alot of plasterwork! A nice foundation for all sorts of detailing, weeds, trash, etc. Thumbsup

The sidewalks look spot on, but the cobblestones seem more like pavers...perhaps they are too regularly spaced or the color/tone too even? Either way, looking good!

Cobblestones or Belgian block? Even if you call them "setts" they were often used around tracks because they can be lifted to allow repairs to the track and then relaid.

Here are some good examples in NYC:

Regardless of what you call them, that's a lot of work - and it looks great! Thumbsup Thumbsup

Well sir, I'd say you pretty much have that scene well "cobbled together".
Should we call you "composer-of-the-year", You "scored" that scene well !!
All kidding aside, That is really nice work !!! Thumbsup Thumbsup Thumbsup

Re: Good things come in narrow packages - Steve - 04-28-2011

Thank you guys! I appreciate the kind comments!! Thumbsup

I will be spreading some dirt and such around, and that should change or break up the look a little. I am not seeing the paver comparision......at worst, they look as much like cobble stones as they do pavers (which is to say, they don't look perfectly like either one I suppose) However, as always, ALL constructive criticism, and comments are welcome Wink . That's how you learn right?

Before spreading the dirt, sand and other "stuff" around, I will be doing the freight house and dock.......more as I get started. Thumbsup

Those "stones" paved a lot of the streets in Old Colonial Philadelphia. When I was living in Center City, going to school and working for the architect in the summer, I would go out and ride my 10-speed Atala around for three or four hours every night during the summer. It was good exercise and cheap entertainment (I once saw a hit down near 9th and Washington - the Italian Market ... where Rocky was running and the old man tossed him an orange - I've never confessed to that before, for obvious reasons.)

But I digress ... those streets were damn rough on my skinny little tires ... and they looked just like Steve's and the ones in Andrew's second link! We always called them cobblestones, but if you want to nit-pick, when the two italian guys show up at my door, I'll tell the you moved and they should look for you in .... Eek

Re: Good things come in narrow packages - Russ Bellinis - 06-08-2011

How common were "cobble stones" used in paving streets in North America as opposed to brick? Here in California, a lot of the old city streets were paved with brick rather than stones which would have exactly the uniform look of your work, Steve. The layout is looking great, by the way!

Let's just pretend I didn't stop posting for about a year, and just keep going....................................................  Wink Big Grin

I am working on the freight house, but took time out to finally letter the crane with some appropriate NP decals:

That's not much to show for a year's work   but it is "something" at least  Goldth. I added a little more rust to the bottom, and some grime overall (the grime is not showing up in pics very well). I should also mention again that Kurt made the crane out of brass (I merely painted it). Here's the link to that thread:

I am looking forward to getting this sparse scene finished and fully detailed. But one thing at a time.............first the freight house. As soon as I get something worth seeing, I will post an update..................I promise!  Icon_lol  Wink

Steve, It's good to see you back !! Don't worry about too much or too little progress, it's still the lazy days of summer - - -
O K, the "days of summer" started here in the Chicago area, somewhere back in the middle of winter Eek 357
Then it turned colder, and we though it was the start of Fall, until we looked at the calendar even the plants, and trees are confused. Icon_twisted 357
By the way, the Liquid Nails "Clear Seal" does work nicely! I haven't gotten to adding the "turbulence" to the "falls" yet.

Re: Good things come in narrow packages - Steve - 05-03-2012

Thanks Pete! On my "to do" list is to make a diorama that incorporates a waterfall (Deano has the original). I want a set up to take my models outside for some natural lighting in some nice scenery with tracks and all. But first this layout needs to get moving again!
