Black in the White House Virus Hoax! - RRManiac - 07-29-2010 Hey guys. I don't know how many of you have seen this, but I got an e-mail from my grandma that had URGENT!!!! PLEASE CIRCULATE!!!!!! written in the subject line. Here is the message I received: Quote:THIS IS TRUE ACCORDING TO SNOPES.COM<http://snopes.com/>; Quote:My stepbrother who does IT work, sent me this message in reply denouncing it as a hoax, and also sent me a link to a website that explains it's being a hoax. Here is the message: I'm sure many of you know not to believe everything on the internet, but this is a definate hoax. Be careful. Re: Black in the White House Virus Hoax! - Brakie - 07-29-2010 That is way it vital to keep your virus protection updated-mine updates several times a day.. On a sad note one of my favorite sites (CSX Archives) is now being caution as being infected with threats. My general rule is to never forward any chain letters, internet jokes, or ANY information that I am not certain its origin. My extended family has a habit of forwarding that stuff ad nauseum, many times they will send me that stuff thinking it is new, but I received a slightly different version ten years ago. I view it as some kid somewhere trying to make up a crazy something or another, and making a game of how many gullible people it can be forwarded to and how quickly the rumor spreads. I refuse to be part in their satisfaction. All of this stuff is the reason we have SPAM filters, and the reason SPAM filters get confused and sometimes junk a legitimate email. My filter treats anything with a subject beginning with FW: and from a name not in my address book as spam. If I lower the security, I get bombarded with the standard viagra ads and "help the guy in africa co-sign a check" scams. Chain emails and anything that says "forward to as many people..." are themselves viruses. Re: Black in the White House Virus Hoax! - FCIN - 07-29-2010 This appears to be another of those junk email hoax messages: http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/invitation.asp But as Larry and Kevin both say - keep that anti-virus software up to date and don't forward this stuff, no matter who sent it to you - it only serves to perpetuate the hoax. I know that because of my wife's in-home business and her receiving emails from her customers all the time - we get virus messages and scams sent to us all the time. Fortunately our ISP catches most of it and combined with our anti-virus software - we haven't been stung (yet!). Can't say the same for some of her friends whose computers have been infected over and over again. |
