new layout : vulcan iron works at gn15 scale - franckcombe - 09-26-2010

Hi,

I began a layout called vulcan iron works at on30 scale. But I stopped it as soon as I got the a virus called gn15. The size of the layout is 140 cm by 45 cm plus the extension (fiddle yard)

Finally last year I choose to convert it in gn15 scale and I opened a new topic to got some new fresh idea. Glen Anthony gave me the idea to re-use some buildings and trimmed the doors. I just remove definitively out of scale, I trim all the others doors to resize it, I remove all the corrugated iron out of scale to add new one and I removed the lamps and add new ones.

Here the result. The layout is not completely finished : I have to add figures, details, ...

Omigosh!!! That's great work! The motive power is fascinating and the Vulcan Iron Works is so nicely done!!! I keep looking at the overall photo of the works trying to see what I can borrow from it to make my steel mill complex look more realistic. The Vulcan sign is a real eye catcher too. Are the figures (with all of their personality) commercially available or were they created by hand? Thanks for the introduction to gn15! More please!! Thumbsup Worship

That is so well done! Really great!

The figures come from http://www.slmonline.com/ at http://www.slmonline.com/shoppingcart/s ... &uid=11130. They are fred and jon because they are beautifully cast, very expressive and also enough small to fit into the small loco. In order to create variety I change the heads with preiser figures and add some small details like sash.

I meant to ask...how big are those locomotives? Trying to get a handle on the scale.

If it is G scale ( 1/22.5 ), and HO scale track, it's actually Gn14.6...OK Gn15. Big Grin

Given: the approximate distance from the sole of the foot to the top of the knee, when seated, is 21"......the wheelbase on the locos is approximately 24", about the same as an HO scale 0-4-0 ( or about 1-1/16 actual inches ).......approximately. Big Grin

This stuff is just too cool! The detail is amazing, and I assume most of this stuff was scratchbuilt? Again, the detailing and weathering is fantastic. I especially like this one:

Great choice for the photo. It's like the 2 tons loco. It's one reason of my choice of gn15 : the great looking of the critters with a lot of characters.
