The patch - faraway - 01-02-2011

While reading an ATSF forum I came across the web side of Keith Jordan http://www.patchrailroad.net/The_Patch/Patch_Home.html. Keith models an area in the south of LA somewhat north of Vernon between Alamada, 4.th and 7.th street called the patch. Another web side has some more photos http://www.bobsgardenpath.com/ATSF_ThePatch.html of that area.
Beside the the fact that I think Keith builds a great layout and maintains a very well designed web page is the patch of interest for all Vernon-fans because it shows photos of industry in south LA before everything has been replaced with the modern concrete slab buildings currently dominating Vernon. It might be useful to get an impression about Vernon 40 years ago.

Re: The patch - SP1 - 01-02-2011

I am too modeling the patch - well, just a few scenes. Key scene will be the one pictured below - south of the bridge.

Bob Smaus layout was presented in the first MR mag I ever bought, back in 1999 along with Jeff Borne's Steel mill layout. Both layouts had a strong impact on me and are still influencing my modeling. Jeff Borne's layout is gone a few years ago and I just learned that Bob Smaus' layout is dismantled also?!? What a pity.

And what's up with Keith Jordan? Last time I was in contact with him he was building a large San Diego based layout. He helped a lot locating the San Diego station blueprints. Is his layout gone too? I hope the patch layout is just a side project. Does anyone knows?

What a sweet ISL.. Thumbsup

Re: The patch - Russ Bellinis - 01-08-2011

I think the patch was S.P. territory, but I'm not sure since S.P. (and subsidiary P.E.) and S.F. had tracks running all over the L.A. metropolitan area.

Re: The patch - FCIN - 01-08-2011

That's a really nice ISL to say the least! Slightly less than 16feet in length and 12 inches deep to boot! Certainly captured the look and feel of the prototype area being modeled. Well done!

Re: The patch - faraway - 02-10-2011

Another location in the LA area is the rat hole. It has had a lot of rail served industry too and might be of interest.
This web site http://www.dpdproductions.com/page_rrgallery_rathole.html has some nice pictures. Another side effect are the older buildings on the photos of the rat nest that might be used as a reference for Vernon buildings before the "white shoe boxes" toke over. I think Russ and Harald may have a look at them.
