Mystery locomotive - cn nutbar - 03-20-2011

Hello Everyone---I was browsing through some photographs that I took during the 90's and came across this locomotive. From what I know,it was a brand new unit that was built at the General Motor's plant in London Ontario---apparently the railroad that purchased this diesel had a motive-power shortage and rather than having the unit painted in London, they requested it be shipped as-is.I spotted this locomotive on Lawrence Rd. heading east.Does anyone have any ideas where it ended up :?: :?: :?:

Re: Mystery locomotive - rrinker - 03-20-2011

NS did the same around the same timeframe, power shortages, forget waiting to paint them, primer grey, slap a number on, into service they went. Still see them, number and a simple N.S. stenciled on the side of the cab.

Re: Mystery locomotive - railohio - 03-20-2011

Someone needs to update his website. CSX renumbered the 700s to 4500s a few years ago and that's not clearly state on the page.

Re: Mystery locomotive - Puddlejumper - 03-20-2011

I was going to mention that but I couldn't remember what series those units were renumbered into. There are some other photos on that site of CSX SD70MACs in various colors of primer, but none of 730.

Re: Mystery locomotive - BR60103 - 03-20-2011

I recall that there was a time when London was producing beyond capacity and locos were being shipped elsewhere to be painted. I remember seeing ATSF units going through Brampton.

Re: Mystery locomotive - Catt - 03-21-2011

I could be mistaken (imagine that) but I believe the pictured loco is a SD 60M and not a SD 70.

Re: Mystery locomotive - Puddlejumper - 03-21-2011

Definitely an SD70MAC. CSX SD60M and SD60I locomotives carried the 8700 series, and though they look extremely similar, are a bit shorter and are not AC traction (as denoted by the lightening bolt under the cab window).

Re: Mystery locomotive - cn nutbar - 03-21-2011

Thanks Everyone---with all your help,my guess is that it is CSX SD70 MAC #730

Re: Mystery locomotive - rrinker - 03-21-2011

In fact, here's one of those NS primer grey locos, #9813 that I shot in Altoona in 2004:

Re: Mystery locomotive - Sumpter250 - 03-22-2011

This is one of the early SD60M.

and this, the suspected SD70M

The extra vent behind the cab, the completely different door pattern at the end of the longer car body, and the completely different trucks, seem to support the theory that it wasn't an SD60M.

The primer gray NS loco appears to be either a dash8 40C, or a dash9 44ac ( GE ).

Re: Mystery locomotive - eightyeightfan1 - 03-22-2011

Looks to be an SD60MAC. SD 70's don't have the blower housing for the traction motors extending out on the firemans side. SD50's and SD60's did.
Here's the same side of an SD70:

Comapre with the SD60MAC:

Re: Mystery locomotive - rrinker - 03-22-2011

NS 9813 is a Dash 9. By 2008 it was actually painted, as seen in this Youtube video I found

Only four were made, they all have three-piece windshields and nose doors on the right.

And so do SD70MACs.
