Re: Big Steel! Update Feb 15/09 - Spitfire - 02-16-2009 Wow, thank-you all! Pete and Jim I am truly honoured by your comments. Lynn, I love the scenery materials they have at Scenic Express. I've also used the Silflor Cow Pastures grass matt for larger fields and it looks amazing! I notice they've added some new products: Buffalo Grass tufts which have multiple heights of grass in the same tuft, and Goldenrod Weeds which I am definitely going to have to try. cheers Val Re: Big Steel! Update Feb 15/09 - LynnB - 02-16-2009 Well Val with the state of the economy and being laid off I think I'm going to try to make some the old fashioned way. Re: Big Steel! Re: Big Steel! Update Feb 15/09 - Bigsteel - 02-17-2009 val,i didnt see your pics before, the grass tufts and ground cover looks very natural.i use old stuffed animals for my "tufts" ,its pretty similar to a human hair plug transplant .great job though --josh Re: Big Steel! Update Feb 15/09 - iis612 - 02-17-2009 Val, Absolutely Incredible!!!! That is some stunning work!! I wish I could get a kit to look that good. Matt Re: Big Steel! Update Feb 15/09 - Spitfire - 02-17-2009 Thanks Josh, that's a neat tip. Too bad we don't have any stuffed toys around here anymore, but for those who do, it's a great way to recycle. Matt, thanks for the compliment. All it takes is a little practice and the right tools. It doesn't seem that long ago that I was having a horrible time gluing the railings to a tank car kit. Someone suggested tweezers and wow - what a breakthought that was. I have to chuckle when I think of some of the kits I've botched over the years. cheers Val Re: Big Steel! Update Feb 15/09 - upnick - 02-19-2009 Hi Val, That scenic is awesome i had a look on the scenic express site for the prarie tufts for sure i will be ordering from them soon their products are far better than the stuff we get here Cant wait to see the next lot of pictures of your progress Re: Big Steel! Update Feb 15/09 - Trucklover - 02-19-2009 Val that is some beautiful modeling!! GREAT work!! Re: Big Steel! Update Feb 15/09 - Spitfire - 02-19-2009 Thanks a lot Nick and Josh! So glad you guys like what I'm doing. I'm waiting on some parts for the benzol plant tanks, so I decided to add a set of stairs to the ore bridge crane. I couldn't really find clear pictures showing how it was attached, so I guessed. I used Walthers modern fire escapes for the stairs -- they fit pretty well, and I only had to remove 2 steps to get the right height. I'm not sure about that platform hanging in mid-air. Any suggestions would be appreciated. cheers Val Re: Big Steel! Update Feb 15/09 - Trucklover - 02-19-2009 That looks GREAT val!! I think that the open platform in the middle is okay. I would think that this stair case would pretty much support its self from top to bottom? Re: Big Steel! Update Feb 15/09 - Bigsteel - 02-20-2009 the stairs look fine val,but i would run some small i beams out to it from the crane,i dont think stair cases like that are meant to be self supporting,it looks good though --josh Re: Big Steel! Update Feb 15/09 - Ralph - 02-20-2009 Wow! The stairs look so delicate compared to the rest of the structure of the bridge crane! Those are the kind of details that end up super-glued to my thumb. Ralph Re: Big Steel! Update Feb 15/09 - tetters - 02-20-2009 That looks great Val. As for supports, can you run some form of structure or beams from the top down? Kind of like a suspension set up. Re: Big Steel! Update Feb 15/09 - LynnB - 02-20-2009 Very nicely done Val, the stairs must have been a bit tedious, were they in pieces and had to be assembled one step at a time or in one piece? |
