I saw it on several photos of B&M engines but that is beyond my scope of simple weathering. I wish I were an artist and could do it.

It's nice to see the prototypes clean but a model looks so much better with some working grime. Nice job on the weathering guys.

A CR SW1500 (Athearn) get weathered with a water based black wash. The glossy surface did not work well and I used an alcohol based wash. I knew I may get some white patches but they can be softened by more water based wash getting some kind of fading. Not this time.... The alcohol worked like white paint, the following black wash made a mess and dull coat could not cure the problem anymore and I had to take the emergency exit :o

I become the proud owner of an undecorated SW1500. Smile

I will take my time to decide what to do. Back to CR blue is one option but I have three more CR SW1500 in my roster..

Lesson learned: alcohol based wash works many times but sometime .... Eek

Your subtle weathering is very effective, Reinhard. Thumbsup

Where the use of alcohol as a thinner might cause problems, instead use distilled water with a drop or two of dish detergent added - similar to the "wet" water used for ballasting or adding ground cover, but don't over-do the amount of dish detergent, as bubbles won't be very effective as weathering.

I forgot to mention that the water based wash is made with detergent. But sometimes is the surface just to perfect. A better method would be to apply a layer of dull coat to get a better grip.
The tricky think is that alcohol based wash worked several time as expected. An Athearn CR GP15-1 got a nice fade effect combined with the following water based black wash. This one went pretty well too.

I don't weather anything heavily, but do try to weather all of ny locomotives and rolling stock. Quick and easy using a bit of chalk to try to have something resembly soot dripping down the sides of the car and a quick shot of mud or dust along he bottom of the cars.

Like Mikey said, nice photos, just the right amount of weathering in my estimation.

Your posting problems may be because some of your photos are very large. If you could reduce them to around 600 x 800 and keep them around 250K, you would still get good enough resolution and uploading would be a breeze. Our software doesn't check for dimension size, but it does check for file size and it will resize any attachment if it's larger than 250K
