No new progress as of yet on the 3D printing, saving up for a new set of tires for the truck, hydroplaned all the way home from work yesterday.
Once tires are gotten and installed will get some more PLA plastic and try my latest box car revision. Also seriously rethinking the idea of using the 3D printer to make the main deck house for the Ruby Belle tow boat in O scale.
Hope to have some progress soon to report.

That is cool I never would have thought about printing out some coats, boots and helmets good detail parts design for 3D printing.

I got my new tires on truck......truck rides better now
I feel better about driving in this coming winter with a good set of tires.Anyway will be spending some time working on the 3D printer and or using the software to draw some stuff to print maybe by next weekend(Friday and Saturday as my work week is Sunday, Monday and Thursday it was Sunday,Monday and Tuesday but they are short handed on Thursdays for some reason but it is all good as long as you like the work)

Found out some interesting news pertaining to 3D printing
1. Makerbot is comming out with a 3D scanner called the Makerbot digitizer
2. Fedora 19 (a linux distro) has 3D drawing and printing built into the operating system and can be downloaded for free

I have an adaptation of a clinic I have presented on using a personal 3d printer. I will be presenting a similar clinic at the 2014 National Narrow Gauge convention, and, hopefully, an east coast show early next year.

All of these structures were printed, the only things not printed are the figures, the wood decks, and the vehicle.

Kent those are some nice buildings are they HO? I model in S , On30 and Hirail O. I have a tiny bit of HO that I have found at yard sales and thrift stores Locos mostly and most of them F units with the SF warbonnet paint schemes they have been used as test projects of being repainted in my free lanced BFT (Buckeye Freight and Terminal) once I have the painting skills to where I want will be painting up some larger scaled locos in the BFT paint scheme. The only layout I have at the moment is a copy track wise of one of lionels postwwar display layouts, I have to stop buying trains and look for the operating accessories to "complete" the display layout. One day I will have a detailed hirail layout as the coal industry in Appallatian(spell check is not working at the moment) is what I want to model with the freelanced Railroad name I came up with.
Anyway back to 3D printing I found out that the Makerbot 3D scanner is being offered at $1400.00 which is out of my budget at this time maybe in a year or two I can get one.

Yes, they are HO scale. I have printed a few things in O scale, barrels, concrete blocks, and a visible gas pump. In N, there is not much I can do with my printer, but I have printed a small building as a test.
As far as the scanner being offered, the reviews I have heard were not good, at least when it comes to scanning items for our use. The resolution is just no where near what we need. Give it a few years.
The printer I have, an Afinia, $1600, is not good for small details. For small details I use shapeways, but on the larger items, like structures, shapeways it too expensive for me, so I bought a the Afinia, and it has printed better than I expected.
here is another item I printed, and hanger based on ones at the Springfield, MO downtown airport. As I recall, is printed in nine pieces to get the layering running in the right direction.

The makerbot printer I have is a bit tempermental but once you get the distance between the build platform and the heated extrusion nozel optimized it is prety reliable but very slow a 6 hour print time on an S scale 40' box car body apporx. 7.5" is about as big of a print that I can do might be able squeeze a 50' box car in S but O scale not going to happen on this printer but with all the free software out there you can draw anything and use shape ways or other services if any out there. I thought about getting a dozen or so prints and go to a train show and just sell them as an individual vs. making a business out of it. My original intent was to fill the gaps of S gauge rolling stock that have not been done before or are only available as expensive brass models also wanted to make them fun by being a kit format as in a body, a roof and floor just add trucks of your choice. But I am a long way from being there gotta learn to crawl before you walk I guess.

Home front is all well so far new schedual for work I am now first shift until they change it again
