Freight Shed, Calais, Maine - sailormatlac - 07-16-2013

I've been documenting many branchline terminus over the last weeks and found out this interesting picture of Calais Station, Maine which is is the subject of a interesting switching layout still in building process.

I'm amazed how the sidings climb a "steep" grade before reaching the freight house. But, most amazing is the second siding that is serving a loading pier diretly located on the the grade. Was such occurences a rarity? I suspect the took advantage of the natural relief. That way, the warehouse floor is at street level on one side and raised on the other.

Anyway, I'm just puzzled how unloading a freight car on a grade must have been tedious.

BTW, any of you ever saw a front picture of Calais Station? Most pictures show the side or the street view. Old postcards show a steel canopy running in front and independantly from the main station. It's definitely a interesting mundane building. Any relevant book could be useful too.

Funny thing is if you grab the photo address and ask the browser to retrieve it direct it shows up perfect. Looks like embedding into another site is in trouble or intentionally disabled by Anglefire.

Here the link imbedded with the image tag and it does not work

But if you click here it will show up

I tried Firefox and IE and no luck. This problem can be avoided by simply posting directly to the forum.

The link takes me to a page with the Angelfire logo but no pic. In the browser bar it reads Lycos.com.

This much of the link http://www.angelfire.com/sc3/aldershotscan2/mec/ will take you to the photo album, but I can't say I ever found the image you're talking about. Would it be the brick structure in the middle of the bottom row on page 2 of the album?

I'd say that the web site is set up to prevent "hot linking" and that's why the individual image can't be displayed from another web site.
