I had a doctor stick a light in my ear a few times. The same goes for my eyes, but I don't ever remember any of them being shrink wrapped.
They must have different kind of doctors in other parts of the country. 
If you don't really know where light goes when you turn it off, I'm guessing you don't know where it comes from when you turn it on either.

The tunnel referenced in the saying is a "generic" tunnel...not a railroad tunnel necessarily. And the light does not refer to a light bulb or to a headlight, but to the light of day....
