The trackside of the fences got some weed and grass like this one

The old fences and the gate have been reused a last time at the west end. The plain asphalt yard got some concrete patches and road marks to keep the trucks of the track.
The yard looked quite large some weeks ago and I considered to add another small building. It appears much smaller after adding fences, concrete patches, road marks and some parked trailers. No more buildings planned or needed.

It is very relaxing to add one detail per day while having a full operational layout, still no reconstruction plans Smile

It's been a while since I last watched you progress. It's great to see how you manage to camouflage Middlesex Factory Atlas lineage with your details. I really like it, nothing fancy, just plain good old industrial buildings! Very inspiring!

Do you have recent pictures of the overall scene?

Gorgeous! Those large industries are perfect and general scene composition seems well balanced. Makes your layout seems very long, which it isn't. Experiment over many layouts is real paying off. Honestly, you achieved a dense industrial urban feel without falling into gimmicks.

Reinhard,That one of the hidden beauties of ISLs.
You can detail them for months and still find more details to add.

As a example:

A dock light for truck docks.These have two colors..Red means the trailer is locked to the dock and movement of the truck is prohibited.The dock lock locks onto the "ICC bar" -that's that bar you see under the doors.

A green light means two things:

1.The driver is clear to back into the dock-the lock will clamp onto the ICC bar--a side note. Where I use to work as a forklift operator it was required the I and the trucker inspect the lock to insure it is properly locked in placed.


2. The trailer is unlocked from the lock and tells the driver he is free to pull away from the dock.

Modeling industries with open doors..This reveals the machinery or shipping/receiving area and brings the industry to life.

I did never notice the truck is (mechanically?) locked to the dock. Do you have a link to a photo showing the locking mechanism at the dock and the truck?
I am only aware of black rubber bumpers under the dock and a rubber/fabric frame around the dock acting like a rain coat etc. sealing the gap between truck and building while loading/unloading.

One segment of the road became concrete covered. An easy way to distinguish between the road and the privat property on both sides.

IMHO such details can bring a industry alive.

Add some wheel chocks between the dock doors and that will add more mini details.

Adding finer details on a ISL can take several months.

At the speed Reinhard works I was expecting to see those trailer/dock locks and lights installed already. :mrgreen: Since I model "today" I guess I better plan to install some myself.

Reinhard,thanks for sharing your modeling and Larry thanks for sharing that video.Now anybody have any thoughts on modeling both the locks and the lights?

I am not that fast at all....

but I do still not understand what the lock is used for. Why not simply tell the truck driver to wait until loading is finished and apply the parking brake at the truck/trailer or place wheel chocks.
ps. It looks like the old ramps at the West Bottoms had nothing like that.

This spot attracts my attention today. It's all wet and the glue and paint has to set. Anyhow the "white wash" of the asphalt with water color does not look very promising. My older powder technique is more appropriate for that purpose.

Next urgent topic are the traffic signs. I reused old ones with beautiful white wood poles. That looks very odd in the neighborhood of old industries and warehouses.

Reinhard,

The dock lock prevents the trailer from moving away from the loading dock wall. As the hilo moves into the trailer, travel would be pushing the trailer away from the dock. Along with this would be trailer chocks that set ahead of the first set of trailer tires.

Along with dock locks, you will also find adjustable jacks that that are placed ahead of the crank down trailer wheels just behind the trailer pin. These are only used when the trailer is setting without the tractor attached. They are there as a safety precaution in the event the crank down wheels collapse.

Reinhard,Allow me to share a incident that happen to yours truly.

I was in the process of unloading a 53 footer(trailer) when the knuckleheaded trucker pulled away from the dock braking the hook,bent the ICC bar and came with in a mule's kick of causing me to drive off the dock..
Had that hook not slow his forward momentum I would have indeed been in a world of hurt since the only warning I had was the noise of the lock hook braking and ICC bar bending.
