You are slacking! You've had it for 15 minutes and it hasn't even got the first coat of paint!,,,,,,,,,,, 357

There is no slowness or slacking, it just is the warm feeling to retire in four month 13 days and 20 hours. That makes you (me!) veeeeeeerey relaxed 357
(this tiny daily notice drives my 15 years younger college nuts..... )

Did all the window opening of the left building, modified the sidewalls (the kit assumes only two sidewalls and both buildings are glued together), modified the window-door corner unit, filled and sanded the seams and applied two layers of white primer.

It was painters time after the glue had set. This are four layers of highly diluted (at least 1:8) Tamiya brown/red mix as a base color. The pure paint has a color close to the dark brown GT boxcar. I think it is fundamental to use multiple layers of diluted paint and refrain from solid paint to get the special effects of the paris plaster.

That looks more like it , Reinhard - but I hate to tell you that retirement means working more than you ever did before you retired!

Those new buildings look good and the painted treatment has given them loads of realism. I looked on a few kits back in the 90.es and was not that impressed with them but they were out of the box and unpainted and you could not really see all the details on them. I guess I am to have a second look now as my interest has moved to early diesel era with some kind of Downtown switching. The work you do is lighting fast but the results are allways very impressive. Your sence for detail is right as the level is perfect. Not under detailed or over detailed, the balance is there and it is dead on.

For myself, I have been Eye balling on something that is as I said a switching layout on shelves where at least one will have rather generous depth in it to able to add some peak in scenes and trackage that gives you a suprice. when I was working on the ferries in the Baltic, I did once or twice walk or drive around the free port of Stockholm and it was cool to see some sidings that ended some 90 degress towards the main track. And I have had a very close look on Milwaukee beer line and MILW has been a favorite line, yes I have the book and have had a cunning plan as I was intending to add some more variety to the FM-switchers that served the line and mix them with some genesis GP9s. I also am looking on various terminals in New York, but then again I like the zebra stripes on Santa Fe units and and it would be cool to have a layout on Santa Fe without their trade mark units like war bonnet stream liners and such. But then again I might have to move and have to settle with some general planning on the project. But these threads of yours are very inspireing and gives me laods of ideas. Thanks for taking time to share us! Greetings from Sweden!

I think that is a key problem Downtown Deco faces. The plain white casts look very poor at least. On the other hands are the professional built structures on their advertising photos scary good. I felt very uncomfortable with the task to close the gap from plain white casts to the perfect showcases. That was the reason why I started very careful with a small kit only.
It is amazing to see how simple layers of brown wash applied with a wide soft brush change this

into this. The result looks much different from a painted styrene wall. You would need considerable effort of skillful weathering to get similar results with a styrene model.

From thereof we feel home again and simply paint the details as usual. Just keep the paint more diluted than we would do with styrene kits.

This detail of "washed" wall from my first kit demonstrates very well how much the white cast changes with a simple wash.

And last not least the integration into the ground.
The left building one is old but still in use. The right one is abandoned and in lousy condition.

I really like that canyon and those builds weather nicely if that was just a simple wash of colour. Very atmospheric. I should think just that section would make a great layout by itself. I'm sure its skill and experience but you make it look so easy.

All the best,

Steve.
