Those are the older glass bottles .I think I would weather it but maintain it's readability.

There was an unused area in the foreground. It became a old unmaintained concrete paved lot with fence etc. The buildings in the background can not be integrated/glued into the ground because they must stay removable.

The Coke sign got a good load of black wash.

Re: Freelance 2014-2 - Catt - 12-15-2014

I noticed some grit by the foundation of the building with the Coke sign. You could do the same thing for those buildings that have to remain removable. What I have done in that situation was put down the grit where it needed to be (with some extending into the building's footprint.Set the building down on/in the grit apply a little pressure to leave a impression of the buildings footprint remove the building and gently wet the grit then glue it down being careful not to disturb it,let it dry then replace the building.

Did not mean to write a book about this ,but in the end you have a building that looks like it is part of the landscape and not something that was just set there to have something there.

Re: Freelance 2014-2 - faraway - 12-15-2014

I am using two kinds of grid to cover the small gap. The black one is an N scale ballast and the light brown one is like dust. Both are applied very close to the building and water carriage with spray bottle into the gap. At that time is the ground, the grid and the building wet. The grid would not stay at the ground if I remove the building.
I used another trick with the styrene buildings. The bottom 1/10" got a thin oil/grease layer. The building can be removed two days after the glue has set. This is a closeup from the very right removable styrene building.

I hesitate to use that technique with plaster buildings because I am unsure how much oil will be soaked by the plaster.
Anyhow, I will give it a try. Thanks for pushing me forward Smile

10 minutes later
The bottom got some oil. The plaster soaks the oil like crazy. Handling of the grid is difficult after it had contact with the oil. The closeup shows all set but the glue is absolute fresh. I will post the result tomorrow afternoon when the glue is set.

Update at the next day
The oil trick worked with the plaster buildings too. I can lift them out and put them back very carefully. The operation needs some caution but it is good enough to be performed annually to access the balcony door for repainting etc.

Reinhard, as usual great work!

Your progress is really inspiring, and I can come up with nothing but excuses not to have made any myself. My latest one is that I can't work on the home layout at this time as some of the christmas presents are stored in the same room (loft) , and I don't want the kids to find out....

After Christmas then?

Reinhard- what I really like about the scenes on your layout is that they remind me of some of the places I used to go
when I drove trucks delivering freight in places like Queens,Brooklyn and the Bronx,NY.
Your attention to detail makes these scenes come alive.
Your work is inspiring.

Re: Freelance 2014-2 - faraway - 12-23-2014

Thank you for the very kind comments.

Santa Claus dropped a parcel an hour ago at my doorstep

I was impatiently waiting for Athearn's GP7u. It is a very universal model for smaller layouts easy to patch for ATSF (as is) BNSF and a bunch of class III RR and freelance RR running old GP7u quite frequent in the beginning with the original ATSF paint scheme. Universal use is very easy if the patches/decals are not dull coat sealed.

the other model I am waiting for is the GP10 from Intermountain. It is also a very universal model easy adapted for several RR and times.

Big coincidence - that is the second photo of 2233 and 2230 I've seen this morning - they also appear on a post on TrainOrders.com

Re: Freelance 2014-2 - Painkiller - 12-28-2014

Those GP7uConfused are beauties and look dead on on your layout. And add a Little color to the layout too! Your progress is as great as usual and I am also waiting on those GP10.s too! Hope that you are having a great Holidays! Cheers!

The Digitrax Universal Panel arrived at the second last day of the year and completes the layout Freelance 2014-2 Smile

Reinhard,Are those toggles used for switch motors or isolation blocks?

Brakie Wrote:Reinhard,Are those toggles used for switch motors or isolation blocks?
They are used for the tortoise switch machines. Most of them are marked with a white tape indicating "out of operation". I started with lots of switches (17) and ended up with eight today. I learned a lot of track planning a layout balance between tracks and scenery.

Since 2015 is also the year you retire if I'm not mistaken, there's a lot of time for the hobby I think, looking forward to the 2015 thread :-)

Happy New Year everyone!
