96' Tank Car - MountainMan - 01-17-2015

Recently acquired by complete accident a brand new N-scale 96' long tank car.

What the devil are these monsters used for? :?

Don't know...the one I found is labeled for CITGO and I can see the trucks from this angle - they should be four axle heavy duties.

Experimental car, not mass produced or used widely in revenue service.

GATX 96500 is on display at the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, MO. Have seen it several times. Some info about it is here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150914428586021.410033.168145031020&type=3 and several photos here: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/rspicture.aspx?id=5843

There was an HO scale, wood and white metal kit of that tank car. It's been several years since I built it, and can't remember the manufacturer.

Well...now the is an N-scale version as well, and quite well made at that. Just those 4-axle trucks are both impressive and crying out to be used elsewhere, on a heavy crane, perhaps? I was surprised to find it my auction purchase along with all the other surprise goodies besides what I bought. Never saw one before.

The Atlas N scale model dates to the late 1960s or early 1970s.

Thanks for that info! It's still in it's original plastic case.

So...for $35 I got a six car train set plus caboose with A-B F7 type diesels, brand new in the original box, one 96' tank car, eight additional freight cars of various types, a GE 44 ton switcher and the original oval of track, power pack and power strip track plus some odds and ends.

My kitbashing dreams come true! I even got a much needed gondola and stock car in the mix. Funny thing is, the seller didn't know a thing about model trains. Nope
