LCL is gone a long time ago and the LCL freight shed and the office building got a new tenant. The first floor is used as a storage too and the second floor is unused.
Anyhow he gets biweekly a boxcar and the track is not abandoned but nobody cares for the substandard ballast.

The lower part of the building was sturdy brushed with a brass brush. That made a nice weathering.

ps. The same building around 1930

I got two old LifeLike Susie-Q GP18 at a reasonable price from eBay. They shall arrive early next week and I will lightly detail them into a year 2000+ status.
That triggered my interest into Susie-Q and I found the Okonite cable plant in Paterson. It is rail served out of 21.st Ave.
https://www.google.de/maps/place/21st+Ave,+Paterson,+NJ,+USA/@40.9046239,-74.1417326,150m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x89c2fc23668ecf71:0x7834007349ff347?hl=en
I am playing around what can be done with such a plain structure. It might be a nice industry or the most boring shoe box I have ever built.
This is the beginning with one building made of card stock and some wood sticks and wallpapered with CGTextures.

ps. I have two quite new and well running Walters/LifeLike SP GP20. Depending on the quality of the very old GP18 drives I may swap shells or fix the old drives.

Re: Freelance 2015-3 - faraway - 12-05-2015

And the next building to the right. The next right building will be omitted. I am not going to install another switch and serve the right hand via rail too. The prototype building at the right hand with the crane may be moved to the left side of the complex on my layout.

ps. It is much more comfortable to work with water proof laser printer images than the delicate inkjet I had before.

Re: Freelance 2015-3 - faraway - 12-06-2015

The third building is placed at the left side. It is the one with the crane.

An overview of all three buildings together. That completes the stage of basic boxes and details are the next topic.

The slope of the right building was not correct. That need a quick rework.

But there is a nice lady beside me and she tells me it is Sunday and 3.rd Advent and Nicolaus day and Lunch time and the Christmas market at Weil der Stadt is waiting for us..... will I ever return to the layout?

Re: Freelance 2015-3 - faraway - 12-07-2015

In the morning sun at the balcony got the walls a mist of light gray and a solid dull coat. The texture of the roof and the texture of the walls was simply too much. The roofs got a low key gray color and the perfect gray of the crane was ruined by a brown wash.
I like to and will keep it on the layout replacing the former buildings.

Re: Freelance 2015-3 - faraway - 12-08-2015

Mike and Catt, thanks for the nice words.

I got two very old LifeLike NYS&W (Susie-Q) GP18 1802 and 1804 to serve the cable plant in Paterson, NJ from eBay.

The shells, black painted tanks and truck frames got transferred on two fairly new Walthers/LifeLike SP 20 smooth and silent running drives. The louvers needed to be modified to fit on the drive and the black roof is extended down to the middle of the louvers. The stanchions and the pilots got some black paint too.
I proceeded with ditch lights and snow plows as the prototype looked like shortly after the year 2000. The unique spark arrestors of the 1802 will be added too.

The front and rear lights are aproblem because the yellow shell glows like the sun. I need to control the light flow. I will try some black paint at the inside of the shell next. And finally need both engines a good deal weathering after a layer of clear coat. Both, especially the 1802, was and is in poor paint condition.

ps. All parts of the SP GP20 are saved and the original SP20 could be reassembled within 15 minutes.

Re: Freelance 2015-3 - faraway - 12-09-2015

Both engines in front of the Cable Plant in Okonote 21st Ave, Paterson, NJ

No more wash and paint planned for the 1802. The 1804 got a new paint in 2003. Both, and the 1800, retired about 2008 and got sold to East Pen RR around 2010.

I moved the bells from the rear wall of the cab at the fireman's side behind the first louver and broke both off during later painting and weathering.... :x

Bruce's positing of a Conrail blue Geep in contemporary local service in the Northeast made was an inspiration I needed.
Like Winchester &Western are the Conrail label patched and the road number got truncated by the last digit. the WW prototype 752 is an ex. CR 7527. The bell is already added but I am unsure if the stanchions can be removed without breaking (it's an Athearn Genesis GP9) to add the white line at the sill. I had some bad experience with handrail removal.

The blue patches are intentionally not sealed with transparent paint to keep the way back to CR open.

Reinhard,

Here's a shot of the front of 752. Mainline Hobby Supply used to make decals for the Winchester and Western locos, but I can't remember if the blue GP10 was part of the set.

Bruce

Just checked and they do not have the WW decals listed.

Re: Freelance 2015-3 - faraway - 12-11-2015

Lucky me. Athearn decided to mount the handrails "Kato style", the stanchions slipped out and it like a perfect fit glove Smile I am undecided if I will stay with the fake road number or do the WW prototype road number with a WW similar font.
Anyhow, WW made an unusual lettering job. They reused the CR number by only dropping the last digit but painted it all new with the standard WW font.

Its looking good, the sill stripe breaks up all that blue. If you decide to change the font style you gotta change the number board color Thumbsup
