CN Kensington sub - take II - Canadian Atlantic Railway - 11-12-2016

This is my second take on the Kensington sub. The first was removed due to our house be put up for sale but due to some health issues that my wife is dealing with we took it off of the market until things settle down. So, take two will be 12' long by 8' long. Benchwork will be 16" wide so I can get all my benchwork from one sheet of plywood. Height will be around 52" high as I'm limited by the door of my electrical panel. On the right are two staging tracks. I'm not sure on what the dimensions will be yet.

The era will be 1980 on Prince Edward Island and with CN being the Railway. The 40' boxcar was the dominant freight car so I am looking at potato loading, LCL with a team track for boxcars, flats and gondolas. Power will be a single MLW RSC-14. This class of diesel was a creation of CN's motive power department. A standard 1800hp BB trucked RS18 was retrucked with A1A six axle trucks with the centre axle being an idler for the lighter branchline trackage.

Re: CN Kensington sub take II - dingbat - 11-12-2016

This is the 2nd draft of the plan. I think the 1st draft would have been too hard to switch the team track, so I flipped it. I also converted one of the potato warehouses to a ready mix company. I also added to 40' box cars to get a sense of scale.

I was just uploading the picture to post 35 the TT definitely looks like it belongs now. The ready mix plant will add some car variety and some industries will only get switched every second or third session.

Here are a few 3D captures from the design done in 3rd PlanIt.

This is great plan! Looking forward to seeing things as they progress. Very inspiring to say the least.

Thanks Ed. My plan is to get the lumber this week and install the benchwork next weekend.

Neat simple plan with lots of potential.

BTW, wouldn't the TT looks better and more realistic if it was parallel to the mainline and thus longer? That's just a detail, but the scene would looks less contrived. I think when you'll put the track down, you'll be able to see what looking better.

Looking forward!

Matt

I like your suggestion Matt. Rob, would it be possible to move the switch closer to the road to make the team track longer without making a mess of the geometry?

Re: CN Kensington sub - take II - dingbat - 11-15-2016

Hi All,

We are slowing getting down to the final design. The latest changes include the addition of a fertilizer and chemical supply company (Brockville Chemical) which receives box cars and covered hoppers. Schurman Ready Mix was also removed from the plan, and replaced with a small Gulf Oil facility that receives tank cars. One of the potato warehouses was replaced with Schurman Building Supplies, which receives lumber in box cars and on bulk head flats. I mocked it all up in 3D, and took some captures.

Take care,
Rob.

We have a winner Cheers thank you for swapping those two industries out. I think it will be better to have a wider variety of traffic to keep things from getting repetitive from one boxcar to the next.

Thank you for the work you have put into the design and the changes I requested Rob. Lumber was purchased and put in the garage. Looks like it will be Saturday before I will get a chance to start putting things together.
