Torikoos 'Get off Your Duff Challenge' - torikoos - 01-07-2017

I'm very late joining the fray here (as usual). I've had some computer issues so I've not been able to post here, but in November I had set myself my own challenge, which involved getting a long overdue project underway and finished of a Proto2000 GP9, which I wanted to strip, detail, and paint as a Southern Pacifici kodachrome GP9 .

So I started off by taking off the shell, and while still painted I removed the bits I didn't need, such as the rain gutter above the cab window, the vents on the battery box and a modification to the sill. I also cut of the original light castings.

After I removed the bits that I didn't need, I stripped the shell and started adding the new parts. I also added the sander doors in both noses, scratch build from Cannon&Co long hood doors, cut to size. This gave me a nice latch detail.

After all parts were fitted, time for Tamiya primer grey.

Then I used Vallejo Model Air yellow to airbrush the yellow.

Then Masking the areas to remain yellow, and airbrush on the red, followed by another mask and then the black.

After this, it's time for decals.

After that it was time for the technical bits. Adding fiberoptics to do the headlights. I used aluminium tubes which give the Details West castings additional strength to 'stick to', and inserted fiberoptic strands. These were lit from behind with SMD leds.

Heating up the fiber quickly to create a lens..

Then insert them into the tubes.

After that I installed the Leds, a Loksound decoder and sugarcube speaker.

Then installed all windows, mated it to the shell, and installed the handrails.

All I'm missing are the detail parts for the wind deflectors, but they're in the post to me.

After this will be weathering..

Mirrors have arrived, so these got fitted.

Also replaced the brass wire antenna with a hair of a paintbrush, a bit thinner and won't hurt me when accidentally lifting this model of the layout at the wrong place...

Weathering to follow...

Below is one of the prototype pictures by Tony Johnson, which I used as a reference for my model.

Nicely done, Koos. Thumbsup Thumbsup I'm pretty sure that Espee modellers were responsible for the formation of both Detail Associates and Details West.

I've now also added the armrests , and started some weathering.

I couldn't help putting it on the layout to have a look how she looks in service :-)

I think that might be true, and the same goes for Cannon&Co. Both the late Gordon Cannon, and current owner David Hussey like their SP. :-)
