Thanks Guys.
I finished off the scenery part of the restoration.

I wasn't entirely happy with how the color of the track and balast turned out so I gave them an overspray of grimey black. I think they blend in with the old track a bit better now. I also added some bushes around the newer section.

Thank you everyone.
I assessed what structures need repair. Other than the enginehouse door hinge that needs re-gluing.

The sandhouse filler pipe has come loose. I need to find pictures of the original kit so I can see where it attaches to.

The water tank filler pipe has also come loose and the chains/ ropes are a bit of a tangle.

And I plan to rebuild the lean-to beside the office building. I'm glad I have pictures of how it originally looked and the framework is still on the building as well as the foundation.

RE: Rescuing and possibly restoring a Layout section - cnrglen - 01-09-2022

I made a rudimentary backdrop out of some foam-core board:

I cut a 20X30 board lengthwise and painted it in two shades of sky-blue. It's not a masterpiece but at least it hides the bookshelves in the background of my workshop.

I also repaired the sand house and the water tower. As it turns out the sandhouse  filler only really went back in one way and the untangling of the water tower was fairly easy as well. I under up using a small amount of CA to set the water tower's pipe in place as well as the counterweight chains, something that the original builder didn't do. The water tower is now glued in place as well.

I did do some work on the yard office/ bunkhouse. I had noticed that some of it's footings were missing from the front porch and the it too was loose from the base. I suspect that the guys who removed 'Hemsly' from the layout did this. I replace the footings and glued the structure back down. Now it's just a matter of scratchbuilding the speeder shelter on the side.

I think the backdrop turned out very well. Nice job on the structures. I have a Walthers water tower that has strings for the pipe and counterweights which looks very unrealistic. I think I will follow your lead and glue them in place. I have some fine chains I can use to replace the strings.

I finished off the restoration this weekend with the rebuild of the speeder shelter.

I sketched out the dimensions of the outside wall and framed it in using scale 2X6.

Then I sheeted it with 2X8. A bit overkill with the lumber sizes but it still looks the part. all the lumber was stained with an A&I wash

I glued the wall to the foundation and used some 2X8 as roof joists.

I finished it off with Campbell roofing shingles. I decided not to weather them so it would contrast to the office shingles. This way it look like the lean-to was built later.

And this was the last piece of the restoration. I'll probably add some more details like figures and cars later.
Here's a few last overview pictures as well as some close ups.
