Deep hole

Hi All,

After doing some work on Morganth tonight i hit a snag just after the bridge i want to add feeder wires to the track the foam is 4 inches deep there and i need to drill through it to pass the wire down through the board to the bus wire ........ apart from buying an extra long drill bit for four holes what else could i use to do the job ?

You could try cutting a heavier guage coat hanger to the length you need. I've done it a few times thru homasote and 1/2 inch plywood with success.

I am with Bruce. If there's plywood at the bottom, use your standard bits to drill through, then use a coat hanger to poke through the foam. If you are so inclined, you can even heat the coat hanger with a torch to ease it through the foam. Just don't touch it with your fingers Don't ask

Hi Bruce/Andrew,

I hadnt thought of using a coathanger to poke through the foam there is an 9mm MDF board to drill through and i will try it many thanks.

A trick I have used for drilling deep holes is to take the drill bit and use some CA glue to glue a section of brass tubing ( an inch or two longer than the holes need to be ) over the end of the bit. Then just chuck the brass tubing in the drill and drill your holes. The only down side to this method is you need to be using a drill bit size that matches the inside diameter in a piece of brass tubing. I have done it a number of times with 3/32 and 1/8 drill bits.

Sometimes if I only need a tool for one specific job, I head on down to harbor freight ("garbage freight"). I know they carry long drill bits for much less than what you would get at the hardware store. They may not be professional quality, but they are much cheaper and will get you through a job or two. But since you are in the UK, I don't know if you have a similar supplier of cheap "made in china" tools.

I was going to suggest you order a new satellite dish and then ask the fitter if you could borrow his drill, but I see you've already sorted the problem Nick.

I know you already made it through this time....but next time....if you barbeque at home....and have the long metal scewers for shish-kabobs....they have a nice pointed end and are a little more rigid than a coat hanger and you can hammer them up through the foam. Of course your wife may not like you using her cooking utensils in this manner, but hey, sometimes you have to slip one by.

I dont do barbeques ... only go to them with a good bottle saves on the washing up mind not married so dont have to worry about the wife
