The Tippecanoe Valley Railway
#1
David posted this form in another thread...I decided to use it for my layout...which needs a thread to help me focus on it

Givens and Druthers

The Tippecanoe Valley Railway
Scale: O, 1:48
Gauge: 36"

Prototype: Generic
Era: 1880s-1930s
Region: Rocky Mountains/Sierras
Railroad: the DSP&P, C&S, etc

Space: 8'x15'

Space is limited by the ceiling's sloop...so the layout height is 24" (track level is 27") to compensate

Governing Rolling Stock: 42'6" passenger cars...possibly a 48' passenger car...so 48' and 54' at coupler face...apprx 12"

Relative Emphasis:

|_________________________________________V____|
Track/Operation .................................................. ..Scenic realism
|___V__________________________________________|
Mainline Running .................................................. ........ Switching

Operation Priorities: (rearrange as required)

1. Main line freight continuous running
2. Testing equipment
3. Local switching
4. Main line passenger service

Typical operating Crew: 1

Eye Level (Owner) 68In.

Layout is to be both DC and DCC powered...though not simultaneously. An additional 2'x15' space is available for a yards once the basic scenery is complete. A small 24" gauge interchange may be built at town site. The mainline is hand laid Code 100 on Kappler 6'6" ties. I'm slowly replacing the medium spikes with micro spikes, 4 per tie. I'll be adding some tie plates. Turnouts are hand laid. The trestle will have code 80 rail harvested from N-scale flex track. The 2' gauge line will be code 55 rail. Buss wires ares 14 gauge, feeders are 18 gauge. Frame is 1"x2" pine. Roadbed is cork on foam on plywood.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm finally getting around to finishing my trestle. I'll upload pictures of it soon.

Here's a short string of C&S cars (Grandt Line) being pulled by what will be bashed into an Oahu Railway 2-8-0 (B-man, converted to On3).

Here is a picture of a curve at the temporary end of track:

The name "Tippecanoe Valley Railway" comes from the fact that there is a statue of Old Tippecanoe across the street from my church.

With a fellow narrow gauger (Sn2 Maine) coming to visit tomorrow after church, I've made a big push to get my trestle far enough along to use for continuous running. It has reached that point...

Keep in mind that it is O-scale...which can be recognized by its height relative to the dining room table chairs and the coffee cups. The flat cars is 30' long.

I still have to add the NBWs which I've yet to order, but I pre-drilled all 250 of them as I figured that it would be easier to do that with it flat on the table. I used standard N-scale Code 80 rail as I felt that Code 100 rail would detract from the trestle. (wow, the Code 80 cross section is hideous...so I might replace it...

William Henry Harrison... That guy wasn't president for long!

I like your progress so far - and I agree about the N-scale atlas rail profile. You would be better off in the long run to get code 83 rail. And 4 micro spikes per tie?!! No wonder I haven't been able to find any! That's okay, when I need more spikes, I think I will get some from the proto87 store. I hear they are better in that they have a point and not a blunt end. I have been having a little difficulty with the micro spikes holing my hon3 code 55 rail tight in place. I think I have developed a solution: after the rails are spiked in place and tested to make sure the gauge is accurate enough, I put a drop of diluted acrylic matte medium onto each spike. After the matte medium sets up an hour or two, i go back and gently tap the spike down tight. The matte medium provides enough friction and tackiness to grip the spike in place.

Kevin, you are a good man! I definitely would prefer pointy micro spikes...and the glue idea is good (although it might not be needed with my insane number of spikes! not such a big deal for those with a Kadee spiker...) I switched to the 4 per tie a bit ago, but much of the trestle is every other as I was running short on my supply.

4 spikes per tie...not sure whether to call that devotion to your art or obsessive compulsive behavior! Either way, it looks EXCELLENT! Nice trestle.

I seem to have forgotten to post a photo of the trestle on the layout...

Here's half of the passenger cars...
