29th National Narrow Gauge Convention
#1
I see this year that the 29th National Narrow Gauge Convention will be held the 16-19 of September in Colorado Springs.

Anybody have plans of going? I think I'm going to try and get up there for an overnighter but I'm not sure which night yet. Since it's a 12 hour drive for me, I'd probably end up flying into Denver and renting a car instead.

Mountain Man, I know you live right near there and I've been trying to PM you but my PM's keep disappearing. It'd be neat to meet up with you if your planning on attending.

I won't be going. Attendance is by invitation only, I have been informed.

This is the narrow gauge model convention? There is usually a lot of info on the yahoo groups that cover the narrow gauge. Usually I see a pretty good synopsis afterward from attendees, complete with pictures, or in the NGSL gazette.

You mean the link in my signature? It should link to a thread here...

Sorry... I should be more specific - the link to the NG convention in the first post.

And while I am being specific, by "Kevin", I actually meant "TrainNut"... 35 35 Icon_lol Big Grin

I wasn't going to be able to go - the $100 registration fee was a show stopper. Had planned on working on Friday, 18 Sept to distract myself (normally work 4x10 Mon-Thurs, with 1.5hr commute each way). Wife told me today she was going to sell some of her stuff on Craig's list so I could go. Gotta love that woman. I live just outside Colorado Springs, so distance is no problem.

I was discussing it with my LHS guy, and he showed me the official paperwork requiring an invitation as a member. He wasn't going, either - if you think that $100 fee was a "showstopper", you should have heard the costs for a business to set up there.

Saddening, because I was really looking forward to seeing it.

I ended up not going. We entered the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace program a week earlier. Live very frugally today so you can enjoy life much more in a few years - complete opposite from what credit card companies push. The $100 went towards our emergency fund.

Since my van pool stops right across from the Doubletree (where the convention was) I went in one night to see if they had anything cheaper than $100. I was offered a 24 hour registration for $35. In the end, I decided I was just going to tempt myself too much. I already have much of what I need for this winter's layout construction, and plenty of locomotive and car projects. In fact, I will be selling my excess HO standard gauge and just about all the 3 rail O.

It would have been nice to meet some of the names from the various forums, and some of the small companies that supply narrow gauge. And I would have liked to see some layouts in the area. But all that can be done outside the convention, too. And I still enjoy the various forums, and the people on them.
