Cool idea. Do you have any trouble backing through turns and switches with these couplers?
Instead of cutting up new couplers you could always ask other modelers for some broken knuckles..

When I was using the U-link idea in OO scale I was able to back 25 cars thru turnouts and s-curves. They were mostly heavy MDC old timers.

That's some pretty nifty work....I can only suppose you don't know any cuss words, or you wouldn't engage in this....
Seriously, though...in the proto picture there is like a tubular "tongue" sticking out from the coupler...What's that for..?
