55n3 K-27, could be built for less than $200, YIKES

Some one asked me a while back about "Modern" power in 55n3 here is my findings on the D&RGW K-27 in Scale55:

The Bachmann On30 2-8-0 matches the K-27 plans in the June 1973 Model Railroader.

It has been done in Large Scale, I never realized that the Bachmann 2-8-0 was converted to a smaller scale K-27.

William D. Hemmeter/Dave Fletcher have done it in Large Scale. Their article can be found at:

The On30 Bachmann 2-8-0's are going for $90 so you could have a 55n3 K-27 for under $200 easy.

What is 55n3:

We will have more on "Modern" narrow gauge in the future.

Give some of the credit to Baldwin Locomotive Works. Their "catalog" designs meant a lot of narrow gauge locomotives with similar lines being used in many parts of the Americas. People used to convert the "oversized" MDC HOn3 into a low-buck HOn3 K-27, and your idea should work great for those in scale 55. I was kinda hoping the Bachmann on30 2-6-6-2 would be a good starting point for a Uintah or Sumpter valley 2-6-6-2, but the went with a much, much different prototype. Are you going to try building a K-27?

Speaking of Baldwin catalog scaling, the On30 2-8-0 matches this loco in Scale55:

I always wondered why it was so hard to get 1/48 figures in the On30 cabs. I had to use what was essentially Scale55 people.

I have a the spare 2-8-0 in the picture so I will probably make a k-27.

That Mexican locomotive is from a common Baldwin design, very similar to the c-21 and c-25 class on the D&RGW, #69 on the White Pass and Yukon, and similar to many locomotives used in southern Arizona, Mexico, and Guatemala.

The Mexican is a 10-30-e, the Bachmann On30 matches that in Scale55.

An MDC 2-8-0, as an HOn3 2-8-2, with Vanderbilt tender.
