LNE ( ex PRR ) 2-8-2
#1
I have been putting this off for about a year now and finally got around to it. I started with a Bowser L-1 and a few pics, saw some discrepancies, and began the rough cuts and tender details.
The Lehigh & New England bought a group of Mikes from the PRR in the early forties, changed the # boards and splattered on a coat of paint, and set them off to work. Other wise they were unchanged. I will be modeling LNE #503, here is a link to a set of pics that I am using as reference.<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.northeast.railfan.net/images/lne503bs.jpg">http://www.northeast.railfan.net/images/lne503bs.jpg</a><!-- m -->

I was wondering if any one knows what the PRR's # was for this same engine? I would like to see if there are any shots of it when it was still in the Pennsy's ownership. My thinking is the more reference photos the better.

Drat ! My reliable source appears to be having a tizzy at the moment: http://kc.pennsyrr.com/data/steam/index.php...may be other references on Keystone Commons (or some other info you can use)! Sorry thought the solution was near...maybe check the link in a day or two. :? Bob C.
OK, here's an answer: http://www.steamlocomotive.com/mikado/prr.shtml...then we gotta find photos (of those specific engines?...or just L1s class locos?) Bob

No idea on the Pennsy #, but gosh she's a beautiful looking brute. Looking forward to following your progress.

I have a Roundhouse/MDC Pennsy E6s Atlantic kit from the late '70's that was added to the "kits to build list back then as part of the overall plan for a convincing "beyond the basement" representation, with the high-stepping E6s slated to arrive in Weissport with a daily string of Mp54 coaches and a head end car or two. It's still on the list of "Things to Build" so I'll be subscribing and doing my best to "go to school" on your build. The MDC and Bowser kits were quite similar types of kits as I recall.

I look forward to what I'm sure will be a fine looking piece of Pennsy/LNE Power.

You're off to an encouraging-appearing start!

Thanks Bob C. That gives me 4 possibilities #1315, 190, 1719, or 1986. That narrows it down a little from the 574 that were built. Cheers

-edit- Just checked with the Railroading in the north east web site. According to them LNE #503 is PRR# 1719. Now to find some pics of PRR #1719.

Some progress shots of the tender.I am having trouble finding shots of the tender back. For the standard railroad of the world there seams to be a lot of variations in the way the tender backs looked. I cant come up with a definite location for the back up light. The rest of the details are modeled after the most common locations and styles. I need to hit the LHS for some more supplies.

I'll post a better shot of the tender rear when I add some more stuff.

I had a few spare minutes today to install the steam, air and signal lines on the tender rear.

I also added some undercarriage details to the tender floor. I keeping the details on the underside to a minimum, I have no photos or diagrams of the underside. It is also very hard to see them any way.
With this part complete the tender is ready to be washed and primed. I'll paint it at that same time as the boiler when it is complete. N ow I can get that started. Thumbsup

Managed to complete a little more on the L-1. I primed the tender, and did the rough work on the boiler.

I removed all the details that were either in the wrong location or just weren't up to snuff with a rough file and hack saw. I'll smooth those spots with some smaller fine files latter. I'll also fill in any nicks and scrapes with putty before I start to add any new details.

Had a snow day from work so I spent some time on the L-1. I cleaned off the rest of the unwanted details, filled in, and sanded the boiler smooth. The new sand dome was than added in the correct location. It's a reworked dome that was in my parts box. I don't know the manufacture, but it was close enough to a Pennsy sand dome to work here. It will still need hatches and grabs, ,,,That will be latter. [Image: lnel1003.jpg] If you compare this shot to this one of a Bowser K-4, [Image: lnel1004.jpg]you can see that the new dome is now closer to the smoke box. Both models use the same boiler. The boiler on the K is unmodified and shows the original location. I will still need to add a new boiler band. With this step finished, it was time to add some of the new details.

When I mounted the steam turret I had to try to blend the old cast on pipes with the new ones supplied with the cal-scale part. I think I pulled it off pretty well with some putty.[Image: lnel1005.jpg]

The air compressor was added next. I had to modify the strainer to more closely match the prototype [Image: lnel1002.jpg] The strainer was cut free and resoldered in the correct spot.[Image: lnel1010.jpg] I still have to work the plumbing into the right position, but that will wait until I add the air tanks.

I have also installed the headlight and generator. The wire for the bulb was fished through a hole in the smoke box front. [Image: lnel1011.jpg]

Here is a list of the parts that I have either installed or I'm in the proses of putting on. They are all Cal-scale castings that I picked up at the LHS:
Stream turret #TU-323
PRR Headlight #190-477
Sunbeam Generator #Ge-212
Air pump #190-347
PRR power reverse #190-23Trailing truck bearing plats #190-390

Lookin' good, E-Paw!

You've accomplished a lot! Getting a steam locomotive correct can be long hours of work and seemingly not a lot to show for it. But anyone who has ventured down the path you're on knows what you're up against, and can tell by looking at the state of things how much time you've spent so far, right doctorwayne?

Keep up the good work! It's getting closer and closer to being completed ... one small added detail at a time.

I'm enjoying watching the progress!

I've done a few Roundhouse kits, but never a Bowser. Filing all the unwanted cast-on details from the boiler was the tedious part. Attaching the new details was fun.

Off to a good start! I love it that you are willing to go the extra mile to get it right...hacking off the incorrect/poor details and replacing them with upgrades.

This will be fun to watch!

Thank you everyone. I did a little more work to the 2-8-2over the weekend. The walkways are now altered to their correct locations, the air tanks have cut and mounted( they still need piping and details ), the trailing truck has been detailed, the lubricators are mounted, and the power reverse hung. Still plenty to do, I got some more parts to order and plenty of odds and ends to take care of. Here are some more in progress shots.
First the fireman's side.

Now the engineer's side.

spent the afternoon working on the L-1's plumbing, even got a large part of it finished.
Here is the fireman's side, The airlines and steam exhaust are in along with the straps on the air tank.

The engineer's side is a bit more complicated. On this side I needed to solder up the air lines, I copied a drawing from a Bowser repair manual glued it to a scrap of would and used it as a template to copy the bends. Their is also a sander control line running along the top of the boiler that was missing from the Bowser casting.
