Tinkering with 2 small layouts

That is understandable. It is no fun to constantly rerail trains, and you have a significant amount of time and perhaps money invested in the layout that is wasted if it doesn't operate correctly.

Thanks, Russ. I think I have solved most or all of the derailment problems. I've spent quite a chunk of time during the past week or so trying to fix these.

The main problem is that this larger layout has been my "learning curve" layout -- the first I'd ever built, which I started 4 years ago. Because I was learning new things as I worked on it, I have been constantly correcting my errors or trying to improve it. I have reworked and relaid the track so many times, that there are a lot of uneven surfaces on the roadbed.

At any rate, it's working much better now but I wouldn't be surprised if the problems return in the months ahead. If new problems start by the summer, I might set this layout aside and expand the smaller one instead -- it works really well. I expect to have a block of two weeks to myself this June (when my family is away in the UK) where I can spend several evenings focussing on this.

Over the past two weeks, I've had a lot of success resolving the derailment problems on my larger layout. I basically took a lot of time to carefully re-lay any problematic track, trying very hard to ensure that the track is level and flat. There are still 1-2 minor problems in the track but overall my locos and rolling stock are running very well and (during the past 7-10 days) hardly ever get any derailments! Goldth Smile

Now that the track issues seem to be fixed, I've been able to get back to improving and refreshing various bits of scenery on the layout. Maybe I'll post some pics in a few days.

I'll also have to get back to the smaller (3x4) layout. I've bought several items for it that are just sitting around, waiting to be added -- a British telephone box, trees, buffer stops for sidings, wood and card for a wall ... As mentioned, it works very well but I'm still considering enlarging it slightly.

In any case, it needs more progress as I've only done about 1/3 of its scenery and have even removed some of its track (which was used on the larger layout). I might tackle this in June when I expect to have some extra time.

Thanks,
Rob
