SSWUP ISL - Build
Def want a few of these eventually on a long layout... http://www.therailwire.net/forum/index. ... ic=31587.0

This has always been a dream but time and spec would never allow for a HO scale version http://genevasub.blogspot.com/

Think I'll start a thread for this soon with the first step being a ISL based on my last HO ISL...give me something small and easy to home my n-scale skills on. Not sure ISL will lend well to N-scale but with the new stuff I'm seeing it's pretty good as far as detail goes, not like a few years back.

Thinking of going NcE for DCC control and starting with one of these http://www.modeltrainstuff.com/Kato-N-S ... 4820-1.htm

Callum;

Great to see you back on Big Blue after such a long absence. Sorry to hear that you had to sell your layout, as it was one of several that I always found inspiring. If you go with N Scale, I'm sure you'll come up with an equally inspiring layout, whether it's a switching layout or just a part of what might one day become that warehouse size dream layout.

Will be looking forward to seeing a new thread about a new layout. Might get me more inspired to actually complete my own layout, rather than just continue to experiment with slightly different track arrangements and operate two or three nights a week.

Thanks Ed,

Nothing in life is important other than life itself so selling my layout wasn't actually a big deal for me, have so much that's a blessing.

I don't see much wrong with operations a few nights a week, I battled to get sessions in one every 2 weeks so don't stress about the "progress" of your layout, it's yours to do with as you wish. I don't think they are ever truly finished anyway.

So, if you knew my layout you'll know I vanished... Life takes turns we don't expect and so I sold my Layout... Wondering if everyone who followed me is still around...lol

Seems i may have a fresh reason to look at another ISl....but in N Scale... will be popping my head in again shortly.

I have been reading this thread over the past few days have really enjoyed your work Cal and am sorry to see that you have sold it but am looking forward to the next one. I have learned a lot and am going to put some of your ideas to work on my ISL.

Thanks Stephen,

I'm also thinking about just holding back a bit and then perhaps doing HO again when I have more space but for now a small Nscale ISl might be a good way to keep busy.

Here is the idea for the N Scale layout based on the ISL I built here. Thinking of using Fast tracks #6 turnouts made by hand (Can get a jig for a good price)

One big change will be a large industry on the right. This I would like to make into a small food or cement plant, not sure if the size allows......also need help finishing off the run around track and how that will feed the industry. Thought I'd get some input from you guys.

Sorry.... I didn't detail the drawing well. As per my old drafts the grid is 100mm x 100mm

Cal;
Since you mentioned a cement plant as being a possible large industry for the right side of your plan; I managed to make a few updates to the plan you posted showing how I'd end the runaround track and include such a facility.

It's loosely based on the Essroc Cement Plant in Speed, IN (on the LIRC/SIND railroads). Here's a Google aerial view of the plant: https://www.google.com/maps/@38.4097275,...a=!3m1!1e3. The plant is switched at least twice a day by the SIND and ships the cement outbound in covered hoppers and also bagged in box cars. There are no inbound shipments of anything as all the materials are mined on site. These are very large facilities so it's really scaled down in size, but should work on your layout, if that's the sort of industry you're looking to include.

Not working with N Scale or being used to dealing with cm/mm dimensions, I have a time visualizing how everything would fit and probably getting my track spacings correct; but here's my attempt at updating your plan to include this facility: There are three tracks serving the cement plant. The center track is of course your working track for sorting the covered hoppers and box cars to be placed/pulled. I have the box car loading shed at the back of the plan and just have a loading shed over the front track for the covered hoppers, with the main structure "suggested" off the benchwork. Looking at the aerial view and street views of the actual facility, you can get a good idea of what the box car shed and other structures look like, along with other details. Unlike the prototype, I have the box cars being loaded outside the shed, rather than inside, to make switching the cars easier. Would be up to you if you wanted the track to run inside the building.

Not sure how many N scale cars would fit on each track; perhaps 4-50ft box cars and maybe that many covered hoppers on the other track. You'd have to allow for the covered hoppers to be moved through the shed for loading. Guess you'd need a small fleet of the appropriate two compartment covered hoppers for the bulk cement and of course a fair number of 50ft box cars too, which of course could also be used by other customers on your layout.

Just my 2 1/2 cents worth.
