Cab ride in steam loco today !
#1
I finally had a chance to ride in the cab of a steam loco today in England! This was exciting as the last time I rode in a steam engine was in the early/mid-70s when I was in my early-teens.

I had to pre-book this several months ago. We're visiting my wife's family in Winchester, England and the Watercressline (Mid-Hants Railway) is only 11 miles away, so it's always easy to fit in a trip to a steam railway here. Today, I enjoyed the 1.5-hour footplate ride inside an LMS Black Five. It was great fun, I really enjoyed it and would do it again -- even if it costs £100!

Here are a few pics showing the engine, me inside it and one showing my sons & I in one of the carriages when we rode behind it again later on.

Thanks! Yeah, the loco does look a little small. But then British locos are generally much smaller than North American ones.

I once saw a pic of the Flying Scotsman when it was visiting America. The pic showed the Flying Scotsman next to a Northern or Hudson (I forget which), and the Scotsman was quite small in comparison.

Having said all that, there was room for 4 men inside that cab. There was a driver, senior fireman, a sweeper (fireman in training) and myself. And we all had ample room, although I was trying hard to stay out of the way!

Cheers, Rob
