Another trio of cars
#1
For Christmas, my in-laws got me a San Juan Car Co D&RGW boxcar kit (On3). 11 or so ex-D&RGW cars, along with 76 ex-RGS, ex-C&S cars went to Pearl Harbor during WWII...and so I'm working on building this kit as with a few minor modifications to resemble ex-4000 series boxcar #210. I've also started building an ex-C&S boxcar to go along with her using the SUF kit and Murphy roof left over from my C&S stockcar bash (the stockcar bash is done and partially lettered...but I don't have any photos to share as of yet). For good measure, I'm also building a C&S reefer using a hardware kit my wife got me last year for Christmas (and decals my in-laws got me a few years back).

Here's what the workbench looks like (the SJCC kit body is left front):

And here are the three underframes:

The top one will be the boxcar (it needs a brake cylinder)
The middle one is scratchbuilt but using Grandtl Line brake parts and the SUF. This will be the C&S reefer and departs from the boxcar at the end sills
The bottom one is the stock SJCC underframe assembled and painted

I also have a 2-8-0 bash in the works...I think the NMRA would classify it as "scratch built", but our efforts to sell our home have been too intense to work on it.

In the past 2 months, we sold our current house, found our new house, and set ourselves up to close the deal a week from Friday.

In between the concrete work, calling contractors, researching properties, negotiating, and now packing...I've managed to work a little modeling time in.

No updates on the ex-C&S boxcar:

The ex-D&RGW boxcar is in the paint shop:

The C&S reefer is taking shape:

The roof is fake board by board construction. This sort of roof was double boarded, so I used a sheet of 0.020" styrene with notches every 0.125" to simulate the 1st layer of boards with a layer of 0.020"x0.0125" styrene strips over the top. All visible "wood" surfaces on the car have been textured with a mix of sand paper, files, and knives. The roofwalk supports are pieces of 0.040"x0.040" styrene glued in place and filed level. All that's left for this car is the roof details, the paint/lettering, and the final touches (brake hoses, brake wheel, and couplers).
