Mark, thanks for providing the link for the video.
Up until the last couple of years it was permissible (and still is on some roads) to get on/off moving equipment. I used to do this all the time to get from one side to the other of a moving train although not between cars and only on locomotives/cabooses with a continuous hand rail separating the employee from the coupler.
Balloon track operations are becoming very common these days for loading frac sand, oil, ethanol, grain, perishables and just about any commodity handled as a unit train large or small. It eliminates switching and allows the locomotives to remain on the head end at all times.
This can be duplicated on an HO layout easily by using a long piano hinge to connect half of the "balloon", 2' x 4'-6'' to the other 2' x '8' portion of a switching layout so it can be lowered along side the switching layout when not in use.

The layout is permanently in place. Here in the UK, most folks assumed my Palmetto Spur layout was portable and I received a few invitations to attend exhibitions.

However, I had to decline as the layout was not portable.

Hi,

Layout progress has been slow, however, after completing Sun Sentinel I've now moved on to Publix. This structure was built using Walthers 'Magic Pan Bakeries' kit

and provided sufficient parts, together with some 60 thou styrene ,for both industries. So I got two structures for the price of one kit Smile

I'll add more details to both structures in due course.

I've also started adding some greenery to the layout.

Here are a couple of pics of Publix showing a plastic pellet hopper on spot awaiting unloading.

regards,

Mal

Why is a grocery chain getting plastic pellets?

As I stated at the beginning of this thread, the Publix distribution center at Deerfield Beach makes plastic bottles for their supermarkets.

I have recently been informed that the distribution center is a actually a dairy processing plant. Part of the plant is a facility for making plastic milk bottles.

Hi, I've now added some greenery to the area in front of Publix.

Having used static grass for the first time on my Palmetto Spur layout, I wanted to use this product and experiment further using Heki 'Wildgrass' matting.

A combination of these products and Woodland Scenics fine leaf foliage for bushes/shrubs/small trees produced these results.

Your layout looks really nice. The Wild Grass and Static grass application is first rate.

They are a resin kit from a gentleman from Canada, you also need to purchase an Athearn 40' container chassis for the frame. With shipping from Canada they are somewhat pricey but make a nice model of a bulk pneumatic trailer.
If you need more info go to http://www.1-87vehicles.org then go to new products for January 2010.
