Google Earth+Ebay = new project?
#1
I found this photo of a narrow gauge 2-6-2t on Google Earth:

That immediately brought forth a kitbash idea - as if I need another project! Off to Ebay I went...

Watch this thread for updates.

Neat, what is the location of that picture? It looks like a good place to see in person.

it's a transportation museum in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico http://www.xalapamio.com/atractivos/mus ... sporte.htm. The locomotive is from the Cananea copper mine in Sonora, about 40 miles SW of Bisbee, Arizona. It does look like a pretty cool museum - they seem to have a few old planes and trains.

Many years back, I saw a logging layout in one of the magazines that featured mostly saddle tank locomotives - they weren't all "docksiders!" Ever since then, I have always liked the little 0-6-0 saddle tanks offered by bachmann and MDC. When I ran across the locomotive pictured above - it reminded me of the MDC 0-6-0t, and I remembered that MDC had once offered the 0-6-0t superstucture along with the HOn3 2-8-0 frame as part of their 3-in-1 kit series. So, off to ebay I went, and this is what I bought:

I don't have the dimensions of the prototype, other than it had 38" drivers and over 20k lbs. of tractive effort. That's quite a bit for a 6-coupled 3-foot gauge engine, so I am assuming it is rather large. The kit is a standard-gauge boiler that MDC marketed as HOn3, as they did with their other HOn3 locomotives. It is 9.5 scale feet-wide like my other MDC HOn3 engines, and that is a little wide for typical narrow gauge-engines, but I will have to live with it.

Some other issues:
-the kit is a 2-8-0 chassis, and I want a 2-6-2. That means, the frame has to be modified and either the first or last driver has to to be removed (likely the last).
-the boiler is about 4 scale feet two long through the tank section to fit on the frame properly as a 2-6-2. I notice the prototype has almost no space between the domes, and it looks like if I cut out that space on the model, it would be 4-feet shorter.
-the boiler will sit to high on the cylinders, meaning the cylinder saddle needs to be lowered.
-the kit is unpowered. I can buy a NWSL gearing kit that will fit it, and I may have a motor that will work. Electrical pickup may be tricky.

All-in-all, this should be a challenge and fun.

I see a 2-4-4-0. Am I missing something... ?

Still looks like a VERY interesting model...

Dave - the 3-in-1 kits were basically a box of parts and some instruction sheets as suggestions on what to make with the parts. The 2-4-4-0t was one suggestion, as was an 0-8-0t. All of these kits required some cutting and fitting and use of detail parts from other manufacturers.

Today I chopped and spliced the boiler shorter, and cut the cylinder saddle. Here she is next to one of my 2-8-0s for size comparison. I still need to do some major frame sawing and hacking to turn it into a 2-6-2.

I've hacked the frame, and now have a 0-6-0. Well, it's a 0-4-0 now until I get the center driver installed 35 . But, the center driver will need a gear, and I've ordered a NWSL gear set, and will use a motor I have on hand. I'm not sure how I will build electrical pickups. I still have more hacking to do on the frame to modify the pilot, and to make clearance for the trailing truck.

The kit includes two pilot truck frames, but these are of the inside bearing type. The prototype has outside-bearing type pilot and trailing trucks, and I think the model would look better with the same style of trucks to help balance the looks of the frame with the relatively wide boiler and cab. So, I found some D&RGW K-36 style trucks online, and should be here next week. Once the trailing truck is assembled, I can go about the final frame modifications. Since I cut off the cast-on frame and spring rigging for the 4th axle, I will need to build a new frame detail to go behind the 3rd driver and under that cab. I'll probably use styrene, because I don't want too much weight behind the last driver, otherwise, the model may want to tip backwards Eek .

I've also done some work on the superstructure. The cost of brass detail parts can add up, so I am trying to make the most use of the plastic details that came with the kit and from my scrap box. I've installed an air pump and an air reservoir, and a bracket to hold the bell.

Here's a few shots showing the evolution of the chassis:

As you can see, the pilot and trailing trucks arrived. Both needed assembly. You can also see here that I have hacksawed the rear frame to clear the trailing truck.

I've also cut the pilot to make way for the switcher-style footboards, managed to figure out how to attach the pilot and trailing trucks, assembled the middle driver complete with NWSL gear, and done a little more work detailing the boiler and cab. Still a long ways to go, but I am enjoying this very much.

Thanks for the clarification on the 3 in 1 kit. I like the idea of a 2-8-0T. Now that I see the last pic you posted, I agree your 2-6-2T is going to turn out great. I will eagerly follow this build!

Very interesting to see one of those old 3-in-1 kits in a WIP. The 2-6-2 is a wise choice because it was often seen in logging operation.

You're doing a fine job, keep up the good work!

Thanks for the compliments and encouragement. I've made some more progress yesterday and this morning. I found a tender water hatch cover in my scrap box, added a rectangle of styrene underneath it, and glued it to the top of the saddle tank to replace the circular blob that was on there before.

I also made a little pocket on the inside of the shell to accept the back of the frame. The frame will be held to the shell using this pocket at the rear, and a screw through the cylinder saddle. You can also see the new rear beam and coupler pocket in this photo.

Finally, the rear "frame" extension. I like the way this turned out, so now it is time to make one for the other side.

This outside frame 2-4-4-2 is a similar modification of a MDC 2-8-0 kit.

I have an outside frame 2-6-6-2 project using a MDC 2-8-0, and one of the 2-4-4-0 kits, in progress.
Looking forward to seeing how your 2-6-2T comes out!!
Looks like it is coming along well !! Thumbsup Thumbsup

I assembled everything to see if it would all fit and make sure that the trucks would not bind on details. So far, so good...

Just an update here - I am still slowly working on this project. You can see the details around the smokebox, and I have added piping to the air pump. I'm pretty much ready to paint the superstructure - I am going to try using a few of those rivet decals from Micro Mark to add a few lines of rivets to the saddle tank, and to the top of the oil tank in the back. Maybe grab bar on top of the pilot, and a few nut-bolt-washer castings to the front and rear pilot beams that look rather naked. I also added a piece of plastic inside the smokebox to hold a screw that binds the boiler to the frame. I've added electrical pickups to the front two sets of drivers, and am working on pickups for the rear set, and debating how to add electrical pickup to the pilot and trailing trucks. I have all the gears and drive components, I just need to make a few brackets to hold things, and it should run fine.

Behind the loco is a tank car I am building. I had an old flat car that I cut down from a standard gauge car. It never looked right to me because it sat high and the queenposts hung low. So, I added a tank from a MDC old time tank car that came as part of one of those 3-in-1 kits. All it needs is paint on the tank, and I will spray it black at the same time I spray the loco shell.

I have to admit that I was a little skeptical that it would turn out ok from the first dry fit of the boiler over the frame, but the results are convincing. Nice job!
