Industrial Street Alley - The Patch
#1
I had an earlier thread discussing the merits of my plan design for my version of "the Patch" in Los Angeles. Now things are starting to come together so I thought I would start a fresh thread to record my progress. No pictures as of yet but I have acquired two of the three hollow core doors I will need although they are only 15" wide rather than the planned 16". I don't see that as an issue although I think I will take that missing inch from the back of the layout rather than the front of the layout. I have also managed to pick up all the tournouts, including the three way turnout in the middle of Mill Street, and most of the flextrack. I have picked up a few structures to get started with for the background portion of the layout but I will need to get the backdrop into place first. Since the backdrop will not be mounted directly to the layout I can begin track laying as soon as I have some time, hopefully in the coming week or so.

I'm posting the layout again so you can see what the plan will be. I have also joined the herd and started my own blog, mostly to encourage myself to make progress in both my hobbies. You can find the blog here: http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/. Model Railroading is really my second hobby so its not going to get quite the same attention as my main hobby of gaming.

I haven't managed to get any track laid but I did manage to finish off four freight cars that have been sitting on my desk for four months. Plus a quick shot of my intended motive power. The CF7 is straight from the box, I'm waiting till I'm a bit more proficient before I start trying to weather it. The boxcars are my current (more less) efforts. I think they look okay but they could be better. I'm also getting some odd white specks on them, no idea where that is coming from. Here are a couple the other two can be found on my blog in the Railroad Model Gallery.

Kris,

Seriously I don't know what you are talking about, the weathering looks great. Thumbsup
I can't wait to see what you do to those CF7's as they are one of my favorite engines. Popcornbeer

And tonight some serious work got done; Tracklaying! The pictures are truly awful but I got all the track down for the left side of the layout. Still needs to be wired up and painted but at least there is a beginning now.

The freight car weathering looks very good to me for your latest efforts. Pelle Soleberg has a good article in September 2011 Model Railroader magazines on weathering a diesel locomotive.

I haven't decided whether to lay the track on the other hollow core door yet, or go ahead and start wiring in the door that I just finished laying track on. Since I'm indecisive about that I figured I should at least bang out another boxcar! Since its late I'm just going to post the picture to my blog. I'm not making the progress I want to make but at least there is progress!

Obviously this thread has not been updated, literally, in years. This particular layout never got beyond the initial track laying and was never wired. Life intervened rather drastically and I'm only now starting to think about a layout again. One thing that I have done is switch from the "Patch" in LA on the ATSF. I wanted to model something that is much closer to home, which is Denver. Research here has shown an area in Denver that would be very appropriate to a small(ish) switching layout; warehouse row on Wynkoop Street just to the "south" of Union Station and "north" of Cherry Creek. I put that in quotes because Denver streets follow the banks of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek. I may or may not start a thread on this layout, just depends on if it gains any traction on obtaining real estate.

Did you ever weather that locomotive? I also thought your box cars were well done. The nice thing about weathering is that it's your interpretation, and odds are good that if it looks good to you, you can probably find a similar example in a photo someplace or out there in real life. Welcome back, and I hope this forum spurs you back into an active appreciation of the hobby (I know it's done that for me)! Looking forward to seeing your new plans and ideas.

I have two CF7s and I didn't get around to weathering them. Although there are days when I toy with the idea of breaking them out and weathering them whether I will use them or not.

I have definitely have hobby things to catch up on and things to think about. I'm interested enough that I rejoined the Rio Grande Modeling and Historical Society and have had a lively discussion about Denver's warehouse row there. I have negotiated space in the "library" when we remodel that room. In the mean time there are plenty of things that I can do.

Thank you for the welcome back!
