The next building for my farm diorama. I drew the building and 3d printed it in ABS plastic on a Afinia printer. All HO scale.

Anybody know anything about hog farming in the 1940's? I model 1949, am a city boy, and want to model a small, but prosperous hog farm. Real life experience suggestions always accepted...

They must have a smoke house...but this is purely speculative and based on a love for applewood smoked bacon and pulled pork...

I've had a difficult time trying to draw or scan (using photo software) a pineapple for 3D printing...I need about 2 million of them for my Oahu Railway...

An update on the shop building for the farm. I installed Creeky shingles from clevermodels.net to the 3d printed building. The building was printed as one piece and the trusses and uprights are separate items.

That looks great! have you figured out the costs per item that you are printing? For instance, how much does the HOn3 truck cost as compared to buying a manufactured one??

Mikey, good question, but the cost of trucks does not apply to desktop printers at this time, cause with most home printers, one cannot get the resolution needed for an HO scale truck. For that, search railroad trucks at shapeways.com. That will give you the answer on 3d printed trucks from shapeways. The lowest price desk top printer I am aware of that will do a truck in HO scale, would be the FormLabs1 printer, and sells for $3200, and the material it uses, an light cured acrylic polymer, sells for $149/liter. At this point, I just can't justify the cost versus benefit. I wish I could!

As for pricing on the above shop/machinery shed, I would sell it for $28.00 for the 3d printed parts. Just the 3d printed parts! That covers a guess at the amortized cost of the printer, plus the material cost. The machines shapeways uses cost in the six figures, but look at what they will produce.

The material costs for a pair of HOn3 trucks is disgustingly cheap...cheaper than any commercial offering on the market in HO or HOn3. Shapeways throws on a $5 charge per Frosted Ultra Detail file, so we cram a bunch of trucks into the file to reduce the unit costs. The $5 charge was put on there because those darn Z-scalers were killing them with the cheap print jobs. Shapeways responded by reducing the material costs and adding the cover...cheaper for my On3 items.

Has anyone used the latest version of 3RD Planit software which has the ability to out put 3D drawings into file format for shapeways? How does it stack up compared to sketchup ? I am leaning towards 3RD Planit railroad cad that does track layout as well as 3D object design, either way I need to sharpen my 3D rendering skills I have not gave up on the shapeways as a means of production but have a few stumbling blocks design wise that need to be overcome.

Just a thought, have you ever thought about custom figures? Maybe S or O scale sized specifically period appropriately for various eras of passenger cars---we large scalers love to populate our passenger cars. Eras such as 1900's , 1930's, 1950's and modern.
