Cool stuff as always Thumbsup

On the penny are those circular saws?

Just a thought, have you ever thought about custom figures? Maybe S or O scale sized specifically period appropriately for various eras of passenger cars---we large scalers love to populate our passenger cars. Eras such as 1900's , 1930's, 1950's and modern.

On the penny are chain saw motors.

People are very hard to draw, time consuming, and would not have good enough resolution on my Afinia printer, at least in my opinion. To get the resolution needed at shapeway, with FD or FUD, they would be very brittle. As are the items above. I could crush them to dust between my fingers. That said, I have downloaded a figure from the 3d warehouse and will size it and print it, then post what it looks like.

Yeah, figures will just not work on my printer, even O scale. No fingers, nose, etc will show. About the minimum detail I can get is .02" and that is pushing it.

I received my some 1:20.3 trucks this week. Two pairs of Colorado Central trucks and two pairs of D&RG 1872 trucks, plus running gear for a D&RG 4-wheel caboose. I designed them and had them printed by Shapeways in nylon (white strong and flexible). I'll upload photos soon. It was pretty cool to assemble the first of these massive...3'4"wb Colorado Central trucks. I'm also working on some wheels which I'll run through my lathe...duplicate in resin...and then re-turn them and mount in 1/8" axles to create some highly detailed and inexpensive wheelsets. The impetus for this was building a 1:20.3 scale Colorado Central 23' flat car (w/3D printed hardware) as a Christmas present for my kids. Now, I need to get their D&RG Montezuma (an 1871 2-4-0) completed and then give them each a freight car as well as a caboose for Christmas next year. The plan is D&RG #49 (at Golden) as the bobber, with an 1872 gondola and boxcar...plus either a 26' Colorado Central excursion car or a 24' CC gondola. Flats and especially gons are popular with them...they fill them with toys. An excursion car would be great for all those Playmobile knights and pirates to ride on.

In the Magazine called MAKE there is an ad for a 3D printer called GIGABOT has a 2x2x2 foot build platform at 100 micron resolution Eek extruding. Every day a new 3D printer pops onto the market 8-) This printer is approaching commercial size and cost wise. on the facing page in a company advertising 2 plastic injection molding machines the cheapest one fits on to a regular floor drill press(not a bench top)for a bit over $500.00 and a bigger self contained unit that will fit on any work bench (no need for any other tool) you can buy several pre made molds for fishing lures and other odds or ends, the molds are aluminum, there are two ways of custom molding one is to have a mold machined for your part(s) or a aluminum hollow mold that will hold an epoxy mold might even hold a silicon RTV mold. You can buy pellets or even reuse plastic soda bottles as a source of raw material.

Part of my "Down on the Farm" series of blog posts, an Octagon barn for my hog farm. The basic structure is 3d printed, and the roof shingles are paper. HO Scale, but this could be done in N scale as well.

The latest building I printed, a hog farrowing house. Just about to the point on the hog farm diorama where I can no longer avoid scenery, cause I am running out of structures to build. Detail on the construction of the Farrowing house can be viewed at: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://nvrr49.blogspot.com/2014/02/farrowing-barn-down-on-farm-8-3d-printed.html">http://nvrr49.blogspot.com/2014/02/farr ... inted.html</a><!-- m -->

NVRR49,

That is an awesome backdrop building Thumbsup

I have not fired up my 3D printer in awhile, but will be working on my boxcar design again soon I hope. I had always wondered how you got the brick and singles details till now after reading your assembly instructions. I may try a low relief structure sometime soon to see if I can do it.

Fiddled with my 3D printer today, only thing I accomplished was to frustrate myself (need to readjust the build platform and re slice the file I was working on) My prints were peeling up off the build platform in the same corner after a few layers may be a bit of a draft in the location I have it setup not sure if it would cause a fluctuating extruder temp. Will attempt to print something tomorrow when I have some more patience.

I had to re-level my print table today. It just seems to get out of level on a regular basis.

Here is a project I am just finishing up, an HO scale drug store made from a pill bottle using 3d printed details.
