I started this layout on Thanksgiving day 2000 and have been working on it steady since then. The layout is showing the Milwaukee Road in Wisconsin from Tunnel City to Portage in the 1950's, late steam early diesel in HO scale. It is built in two rooms and will cover a space 16' by 22' around the walls and a peninsula. Here is an overview pic of the yard in Portage. It is 2' wide and 14' long.
I will be adding more pic's and catch up to where I am building now. I hope you enjoy the show and come along for the ride!!

That's the green building? And what's in a Caboose Supply Building?
Great work! Looking forward to more photos.

I envy your large yard. Making and breaking trains in a yard like the prototype is more compelling than hidden staging yards as the only supply of trains.

That is one sweet looking layout..I could spend 2 or more hours operating such a layout.

Thanks guy's I have a lot to show.
Andrew, the caboose supply building stocked the caboose with fuel oil or kerosene for the heaters, ice for the ice boxes if equipt, bedding, food whatever was needed to keep the caboose going. Also minor repairs.

Heading West through the yard you see the bunkhouse. The house was used for layovers, it had showers, lockers and beds. It is scratchbuilt using Milw. plans. I still don't know how anyone could sleep in there with all the train noise 24 hrs a day.
a little further and you come across the extra long speeder shed and the MOW track.
All the way on the west end is the large A frame hoist, two RIP tracks a water tower. At one time portage had five such tanks.

Next to the water tank was the single stall engine house. It is built using Milw. plans. Also the sand tower, fuel tanks and some odd sheds.
We will be leaving the yard now and to do so we travel all the way back to the East end where you see the York Coal Co. which is a Campbells kit. And you can see tracks blast through the wall.

Thanks Ralph, I never liked hidden staging, I figure if the railroads can do it in a yard so can I. The train comes in the yard gets broken up then put back together.

What better a way to cover a hole in the wall but with a tunnel. Next for your viewing is the town of Tunnel City. Tunnel City is on a section that is 2' wide and 3' long with a 1' leg on the left side. The Milw. Rd. and the C&NW had tunnels and stations here. This was tunnel #1 on the way west for Milw. tunnel #2 is somewhere in Montana. Here is an overview picture.
Some Tunnel City fun facts,
Tunnel City was named before any railroads made it this far.
The Milw had a two track mainline and a single track tunnel, the C&NW was just the opposite
The exact date excapes me but the C&NW tunnel collapsed and instead of opening it back up they just put in a switch and bought right of way using the Milw. tunnel.
Urban ledgend has it that there are two, three deck auto carriers full of new Ramblers still inside

just the Milwaukee station and telegraph office
backside of the town itself
and the last pic of Tunnel City is the 1' leg with a tractor rebuilding outfit.

The next town east fron Tunnel City is Tomah, but before you get there you have to pass through some countryside first. This next section is 2' wide and 5 ' long and contains a hut cabin scene and a dairy farm scene. Here is an overview.
Wisconsin has it's share of deer hunters and you can find small hunting cabins all over. Here is one I modeled.
