How do I talk to people who are "wrong"? Don't burn me yet

You mentioned having a question that you were then hesitant to ask because it would conflict with the "information" that the other person had just presented. You can politely walk away, but that does not get your question answered. Fortunately, we now have the internet where you can come to a forum like this one and ask any question about trains and probably get the correct answer from someone. If the answer is not forth coming immediately and your question moves off the front page, just do a bump or two until someone sees the question and gives you the answer. Even better, if there is a historical society or a Yahoo group for the railroad that your question is about, you might get answers there.

Be careful there too..A lot of BS was put forth by railroaders just to satisfy what the person wanted to hear or just give a quick answer and by a alleged "authority" on (say) the Hooten Hollow & Western that its hard to get the facts-even well meaning answers may come from a book written by a supposed rail historian that didn't do any real research..

We have that problem here in Bucyrus by a authority/expert on the local rail scene.Very basic research has found this man lacking knowledge..
