Hi,
nice looking Loco....Love those old Alco´s Thumbsup Thumbsup Thumbsup Thumbsup I want to build one or two RS18 with some kitbashing/scratchbuilding from RS11/32 shell etc....but that´s another story....Have one Proto RS18 but have to put a decoder in it first and repaint it for BCR.
I have used a combination of Peco Code83 turnouts and ME weathered/non weathered Code70 Track for industrial spurs. Flattened the railjoiners on one end and soldered the code 70 rail on top, working fine,I used the Peco ties for the ME track.
Your new layout idea sounds very nice.Keep it going.

Cheers,Chris

Thanks for the words of encouragement Chris. I recieved a couple of track plan drafts that I'll post up later.

We have done a few revisions and this is the latest version

Looking at modifying or removing the Imperial oil spur and extending the "main" by the team track to split into two 6' long staging/storage tracks. The other end of the "main" can also be extended 6-8' for staging if needed.

I decided Imperial Oil had to go. Yard tracks and team track have moved slightly and staging has been added. I am happy with it now and look forward to my track getting here so I can get things started.

Ideally, this would be laid out on a 25-30' straight section but it needs to work with my available space. Curves are 22 degrees and I will be using the RSC-14 which is the same length as a RS11/18 and cars will be in the 40-50' range so things should flow well. I'll get the track down and then add some roads and those ugly get in the way of good pics power poles.

Stephen, getting rid of Imperial Oil really gave a more realistic setting. Don't forget tank cars can still be spotted at the team track or other places that can fit the bill. I think the general arrangement makes a lot of sense and fits the prototype pictures you shown us so far.

Since your RSC-14 have 3-axles trucks, just try it on a mockup piece of track to make sure it works correctly. From experience, this is near the limit radius for unproblematic operation.

I think at this point, it will be more productive to fudge the track plan directly on the benchwork. My reasoning is that once working with real track, we always find ways to tweak things to get larger radius here and there by adjusting it until we find it looks good. Since you are kind of protofreelancing that shelf layout, you should take this opportunity to tweak small details. Maybe a few industries will move a few inches here and there. That way, you'll be able to get that balance between industries and the scenery zone you wish to implement between them.

Just a suggestion that can be worked later, but I would suggest to place Gulf Oil where is the team track and place the team track along the yard, near the layout edge. My reasoning is that reaching Gulf Oil actual location will be a little bit hard. Also, moving it will make it easier to scenic the area as a whole between the yard and the other industrial location. Just my two cents.

Great suggestions Matt. Things will probably need to be wiggled around to suit looks and operations. Switching locations with the team track and Gulf is also going to happen based on your suggestions and also my electrical panel is there and the door opens outward so with the team track there it will be low enough to open the door without having to uproot the oil tanks each time I need access.

Ah! those electrical panels... always in the wrong place! Seriously, everywhere I go I feel they are just put without a single thought!

I tried this while watching Pluto's press conference. Nothing fancy, but it may gives a few ideas to work things around. I'm not sure about the suggested red track, but at least it is easier to access.

I think the team track location is a good location. I do like Gulf down in the back corner and I thing with the TT gone from the top I could lengthen the yard tracks Popcornbeer

Thanks Syl! That RSC-14 took me a long time to get a hold of. Wish I could go back in time and get a couple more for probably less money than what a full blown plastic diesel goes for these days. Glad you find it interesting and I hope I can make it a worthy build.

More plan mods. Bigger radius and gave the TT another location and its own switch. I will go back to using the two stub tracks in the yard to park MOW equipment, vans and the loco. The area around the TT will have a bit of equipment for different unloading requirements.

A few things that helped bring me to doing this layout was Steve Hunter posting a large collection of photos of the railway here on PEI and his Shapeways creations that have several unique parts and rolling stock that was also used on PEI.

I can't see our dollar improving for a while, but most of that Shapeways stuff, nice as it might look, can be scratchbuilt for quite a bit less money. That's just my $0.00 cents worth ( $0.02 rounded down, of course, since we no longer have pennies).

True, but my skill set is fair and my time limited. I would love to have the ability and time to build that plow.
