Hurray, KFC is back in town 2285_

I wish I had the space to model the real next KFC at the corner of 53rd St and 5th Ave. That area looks very interesting to model. That is true for the commercial area at 5th Ave as well as the residential buildings at 53rd St (but absolutely no rails or rail served industry). Cornerstone's Hardwood Furniture Factory is a real huge model dominating the west end of my small ISL.

Reinhard - came across this http://www.downtowndeco.com/site/ may be useful for some of your more seedy/rundown areas - scroll down to bottom of page to "View all Products"

Jack, good choice. Even the Walthers Cornerstone Merchants Row would work. The only problem is trying to reach over the buildings during switching.

Reinhard, There are buildings like your KFC in the area as well. https://www.google.com/maps/place/812+4t...!1e1?hl=en

I am fascinated when complete building are painted in one color regardless of the underlaying structures like bricks etc. It is not beautiful but it looks certainly odd to me. That is quite rare in Germany but I saw if frequently in the US and used in on my layout.

But I misjudged the enormous optical effect of a large central building painted in one color only. That was clearly to much of uniformity and the bricks came back Smile

I used about 10 kits from downtown deco on the previous two layouts. I love downtown deco but they are not easy to implement in a modern layout. They are have a touch to be cute, to be in the red light district and larger buildings are frequently abandoned and they are not designed to be rail served. The commercial rows need massive modifications like roller gates etc. to fit into a modern layout except you go for a dedicated red light district. The current layout has three downtown structures.

The rows make great backyards

The other KCF in Brooklyn is a good reference for me. Thanks for pointing it out.

Reinhard, there are/were many small buildings in Bush Terminal like the Downtown Deco kits. There are a variety of businesses such bars, mechanic & auto body shops, restaurants, outlets, and strip clubs.

Did you seen the other one named "Scenery"? I wish I could do the details at that level.

One of the low profile buildings at 1st Ave between 43rd St and 51st St are a better match for the location so close to the tracks than KFC. KFC is by purpose in residential and commercial areas at 4th and 5th Ave and not at the Bush terminal yard.
This is just a shot from a front at 1st Ave grabbed from street view.

Did the raw boxes today to form three of those typical low profile businesses found at 1st Ave between 43rd and 51st St.

I love playing with my new laser printer. This only quick and dirty done with scotch tape but it provides a good impression.

This simple buildings fit nicely into the overall scenery. Just spend a quick dark gray roof from the rattle can.

I lowered two of the buildings by 1cm to get better proportions of flat buildings.

That completes the building kernels with mock up skins so far because I have to do a longer break now. The luggage is ready to be packed soon and my wife demands the sun of Gran Canaria again 357

Enjoy your holiday Reinhard.

I can't blame her wanting the sun, my wife is the same, but I wish I could take a modeling project along, there's never any time for that on holidays. :-)

That whole area will be unrecognizable in 5 years. They're turning Bush Terminal into recreational space.

Absolutely no progress for over a month now. Two weeks vacation and one week contractors exchanging all window glass panes is also not helpful to have progress with the layout. But I play at least twice a day with the layout and enjoy it really.
I wish there would be a history function in Google maps and especially Streetview. Shortly after the industry will be gone Streetview of the current industry will be gone too.

Yep, a layout is never finished. Same here for over 6 months, lack of modeling motivation. Luckily inspiration has come to home and I´m redesigning my layout. Youtube is a great tool for inspiration. Watch this video, skip to minute 7:20. Sorry to hijack your thread.
