Retirement ....Good , Bad , So-so ??

Rob,I agree friends and family can take advantage and I had to learn to say no..I don't mind helping if there is a real need but, every day because I'm retired.. No, I don't think so.

Real friends doesn't take advantage in the name of friendship nor should our families in the name of family.

Thanks, I agree. To be fair, this didn't happen a lot -- only 1-2 times when I was really busy.

GOOD...........
I was 22 years USN, transferred to Fleet reserve Feb '83, went to work for Datagraphix was there, until home computers, burnable CD's, and CD burners, killed the microfiche industry, spent three years working at a hobby shop, until the owner drove it into bankruptcy. With no jobs available, I started collecting my SSC . I was officially transferred to the Navy retired list 1 Nov. 1990.
In 19 days I will have successfully completed 72 circumnavigations of the sun, and commence my 73rd. I will be at the Expo building at the Milwaukee county fairgrounds, at "Trainfest", Nov 14,15. One of my annual " the public can see what I've built " events.
I live in a condo, my unit is one out of four, in this building, that has a basement, ground floor and second floor, and attached garage. Hey, had to have a place for the trains. there is a mirror image unit to mine, a "multi level" unit across the front of the building, and the last unit is above the four garages, at the back of the building.
With all that, a divorce, four daughters, seven Grandchildren ( with an eighth on the way ), being still independent, physically and socially, ........... yeah, GOOD

I've only been retired for 4 months now and I am loving every minute. I still get up around 4:30 every morning but that's OK because I like that time of day. Since I don't watch television, going to bed at 8:30 has never been a problem. I planned long and hard before retiring. I'm too young for full SS, but I don't need it right now. I do miss not being able to spend $100.00 a week at the LHS, but I bought enough in the last few years to complete my layout (and then some!). Lots of kits on the shelf. I am expanding my organic garden and have become a Wikipedia contributor (early 60's and 70's rock and roll) to fill some time. Started to travel a bit, just returned from Alabama where among other things I visited the Foley Alabama Railroad Museum; where they have a 60' x 22' "O" gauge model railroad. Check it out on the Internet. Things changed at the place I worked for 43 years, new owners thought they could manage differently and I was basically moved to a position where I actually did nothing. Easy money but no satisfaction at all. After over 35 years of management responsibilities I just couldn't take it anymore...I tried for about 1 1/2 years before leaving. That and the daily 47 mile each way commute with 26 miles of Interstate highway being reconstructed (for the next 6 years) did me in. All in all, it was the best move I ever made...haven't missed it at all. Like others have said, I don't generally even look at a clock anymore!

I was forced onto retirement in 07 because of health reasons. I was planning on retiring in 13 so finances not as I wished but doing OK. I don't miss work at all as I have plenty to do at home.I don't model as much as I thought I would partly because of newly acquired disability, the reason for early retirement. Just turned 60 last month. I would love it if not for disabilities, not completely unable to do things but more difficult. So I guess I would say not great but not bad either. So looks like I would be in the good category. Oh yea I worked evening shift most of last 20 years because I am not a morning person. Had to buy an alarm clock when I retired.

To err is human, to blame it on somebody else shows management potential.
