end of the spur
#1
It's been a while since I've been here, now that 59th and Rust is finished and a few exhibitions under my belt, i thought it was time to start a new project.

End of the spur (not it's finished name) will be a modern based layout ( 90+) on a single industry, the layout is well on to being finished, I can do a blow by blow of the build or just some photos of me putting the final touch to it.

What do you think??

The plan needs a runaround track. Otherwise the cars will need 0-5-0ing to put them in any spur. >)

Ray,

A detailed step by step would much more interesting isn't it? ;-)

Why would there be two switchers on that little MR? Are the cars always going to stay on the layout? And how are cars in fiddle yard going to get to spurs on left side of the layout????

you've got to think out of the box.!!

First move is to make sure the in view switcher parks under the bridge, then the second switcher arrives from the fiddle yard with 3 freight cars(max train length),pulls into the centre road at the left hand side, if there are any cars for the right hand spurs these are spotted next to the SUB, then pulls forward to the centre road, the switcher under the bridge, then come out on too those cars (so he's on the right end to switch those spurs) then heads forward and couples to the end of the other train to release the switcher, pulls clear, this switcher either heads back to the fiddle yard or picks up any cars from the front spur left hand side and takes these back.

Once this is clear, the other switcher spots the cars, it now being in the middle of it's train to switch in either direction, simples!

This is why they need 2 switchers, (think progress rail) this also adds more interest at a exhibition, and rule 1 applies.

To any good RR time is money. Having two crews plus the cost of the 2nd loco is a very big waste of money!

lighten up mate ,it's a bloody model not the real thing, it's free lance, it's the companies own switchers that will do any switching, not a class 1 or shortline

rule 1 applies Thumbsup

Having worked for the real RRs not going to take back anything I've said. But it's your MR so play w/ your choo choos any way you want.

know one asking you to retract any thing you've said, that's your opinion and I know there's a lot of truth in what you say. but surely this type of situation would crop up some were in a RR life time.

They would probably make the train up in the yard, with cars either end of the loco (depending which spurs want switched) then propel the train.(I can do this with the model)

it's a long time since anyone said, are you still playing with your "choo choos" Thumbsup

I always bow to superior knowledge Worship and hope to take on board any comments, but sometime you've got to use a bit of modellers licence in certain situations , and the average person at a exhibition would not think about, what it would cost to run 2 locos, , all they want to see is something moving , so if I have 2, more the better.

on with the build

.....and a lot ofshortline RRs used two locos, one each end, and only one crew - so the crew moved to the other engine to switch opposite facing spurs - that way there was no need to run any distance back to a run round in order to get a loco onto the other end

Even the big boys do it, probably to save going to the nearest runround track!

Hey Ray

That's how Progressive Rail work the Airlake Industrial Park near Lakeville, MN south of Twin Cities.
They have 2 x SW1500 one for facing moves one for trailing
The Florida Central has two or more locos on three of its five branches
They often double head down the branch drop one loco off then use both locos to switch the facing and trailing moves

I guess both RR can't be any good...
