HO scale oreboat
#1
Until I can get working on a layout again I've been working on a few small projects. One of which is an ore boat that will eventually go alongside my ore dock. I'm scratchbuilding the model out of styrene and basing the model off of the Joseph L Block, a ship that frequently visits the ports that ill be modeling. In HO scale the model would be almost 11 inches wide by over 10 feet long, so I'm gonna use a little selective compression and make my model 8x75 inches. Here are some pictures of the start that I have so far.

Kevin, I will follow with interest. I wish I had gone to Astabula and Conneaught more when they were unloading these with the Huletts, and knew what I was seeing.

Well I have done a little more work, it looks the same, the hull is just a tad longer now. The way the real ship sits in the water the rear of the hull is rounded and I haven't decided how to model this on my boat.. I don't know a good way to make compound bends yet, so I may forgo that detail. but as my model gets bigger, I think I'm going to need a longer workbench.

Kevin - I don't know if this will be of use, help, or interest http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index. ... les-ferry/ - or possibly even this http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index. ... ry-viking/

EDIT - this is also about in my "Favorites" listing - TBH, I don't know if the supplier still exists - I pass it on for what it is worth - http://www.mdk-verlag.de/schiffe2.htm

It's far bigger than what I've attempted, but have you considered shaping the compound curves of the stern starting with a solid block of wood, then grafting it to the rest of the hull?

Keep up the Good Work.
