I'm not sure how well known this site is, so I thought I would share it:

http://historical.mytopo.com/

As the site name implies, it indexes a wealth of topo maps. For any given area, I've found that there are generally two maps: a 1910's and 1940's era. Either show main roads, railroads, canals, etc. The older maps I find especially interesting as many railroads hadn't been absorbed into larger systems yet, so you see a lot of names that are no longer around. The site is addictive....

That's cool. I had seen it before, but thanks for the reminder...! Big Grin

I have been looking for a Canadian equivalent. There are bits and pieces available, but nothing I have come across that is that systematic. I did manage to get my hands on a circa 1950 topo map of my hometown, courtesy of Canadian Railway Station News (http://www.eagle.ca/crsn/index.html) a southern Ontario publisher/vintage map & photo dealer. I am not sure that the url above is the latest incarnation of his site, but it's all google could locate.

Good stuff, Mason Jar Thumbsup - just not my part of the country.
What a great find .. Thanks Thumbsup . For some time now I was trying to find the ex DL&W/CNJ/LNE trackage through my town ( it changed hands a lot.). After A quick look, there it was, the row and ice house right next to Saylors lake. Thanks a bunch that made my day.
One trick I have found is to locate historical track drawings and superimpose them onto a current topo map. It's more of a hassle than being able to just look them up somewhere, but it might be all that's available for a while. 8-)
