Ever since Hubble came on line our eyes have been literally opened to the vastness of the Universe.

Andromeda Galaxy. Due to collide with the Milky Way in about 3 billion years...so brace your selves. Goldth

If anything can be said to be "breathtaking"....these pictures surely are....Keep 'em coming..!!! Thumbsup
The trace image of an incredible explosion estimated to have occurred when the universe was only 630 million years old - this is GR8_Gemini:

Great pics!

Back in the '70s and '80s, when I was a teenager and in my 20s, I was REALLY into astronomy (as much as I am into trains now). My Dad was a strong MRR enthusiast and assisted as a conductor on a heritage train back then, but (instead) I was usually outside at night with one of my two telescopes looking at the four brightest planets, variable stars, nebulae or meteors!

It's mind-boggling how extremely large the universe is and how tiny the Earth is.

As Jody foster said in Contact - if Mankind if the only life there is, what a terrible waste.
Can anyone recommend a site that lists astronomical events that are coming up? Our newspaper used to have an ad from a museum but that disappeared in a round of budget cuts.
(One with a Canadian or Northern Hemisphere bias would be good.)

You could try searching here, Sky and Telescope is a very old and well-known magazine: www.skyandtelescope.com
and also this is a Canadian magazine/site as well: www.skynewsmagazine.com

Cheers, Rob
David (and interested others), PBS's favorite astronomer Jack Horkheimer produces a weekly 5 minute naked-eye astronomy series for Educational TV (in the States), describing phenomena for the week, where and how to find them. A web site, http://www.jackstargazer.com/ details the show's info and more - at least fun, if not what you're after ! Bob C.

...and the pictures were absorbed by a black hole...?? Eek
Must be...it's still right where I left it.

That's a really stunning picture...!!

It never ceases to amaze me how a handful of engineers can figure out how to put some man-made piece of goods at the right place, the right time, take a picture and send it back for us to see.... Eek
