I've been frettin' for some time now that the old Gauge may some day disappear from lack of traffic, and have looked for ways to rescue some of my favorite threads there. I started by copying and pasting the text to a Word document, leaving a few empty lines where the pictures were inserted, and keeping track of which pictures went there....As you can imagine, this was quite time consuming and didn't get through even one of the threads....Last night my son who came up to visit (he's a digital controls engineer and kind of a PC nerd) showed me how in a few minutes' time I could copy the entire thread, page by page, pictures and all..!! 2285_ 2285_

Here's how it's done....

Go to Z, open the thread you want to rescue. On the tool bar, click "File" and then "Save as", and direct it to save in whatever folder you want (I created a main folder in "My Documents" called OLD GAUGE, and a subfolder for each thread, and saved it there.) Don't rename the page when you save it, just use the default name the system uses since it's already got the thread name and a page number. Go to the next page on the thread and do the same...and so on....I copied about 10 threads in a little over half an hour..... Goldth

The only down side to this, is that links that were made to the old Gauge do not work if the links were not "updated" after the transfer to the new servers/forum...But something is better than nothing....

So stop "frettin' " and rescue your favorite threads.... Thumbsup
I also save the Zealot threads to a Word document: open the thread, left click and hold on the first word or picture, then scroll down to the end of the post, highlighting everything, including photos. Next, click on "EDIT", then "COPY", and then "PASTE" it into your Word document. There will be a space at every place where there was a picture: I click on it, which will cause a line to show - hit "DELETE", then type in "Insert photo # XX". I generally spend most of the time looking for the proper photo, as I don't usually have them stored together unless they were shot specifically for the thread. 35
"COPY" your Word document, then "PASTE" it into the composition window for your "new" thread here, then insert the proper links to the pictures. Make sure that you don't use the picture links to Zealot if your pictures are stored in the Gallery there - poor netiquette. Misngth

I once had a very valuable website disappear. I managed to contact the webmaster and he was able to find a few of the pages archived. I saved the pages I could at that time.

Today, that webpage is back up:
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.midcontinent.org/rollingstock/CandS/dsp-passenger/dsp_fleetinfo.htm">http://www.midcontinent.org/rollingstoc ... etinfo.htm</a><!-- m -->

I just saved a few of my favorite threads from the Z.
The easiest way to do it on "Vbulliten" type forums is to

Go to the thread
In the thread go to Thread Tools
Select Show Printable version
Go to Edit>Select All and copy

Open Word Doc and Paste it.

Once it all pastes, everything is transferred, even the pictures. The best part is the pics are resized and you can enlarge them to normal size posted just by dragging one of the corners by enlarging.
I can make a quick diagram if you like

Most forums frown on this, although pictures from sites such as photobucket are okay, or ones from your own site.

Wayne
Wayne is correct in this. Not only is it frowned upon because it takes up bandwidth and storage space, but it takes away from the normal activities on the site. Besides, it also becomes part of the statistics and the site admins know when someone outside is linking to pictures stored on their site. An alert admin will deal with it as soon as they know.
Not only frown on it but also claim ownership to it... even at the extreme as to putting their own watermark on it

You are right, according to some sites, everything posted on that site belongs to them. I'm not aware of any sites going to the extreme of watermarking pictures uploaded there, but it doesn't surprise me that it would.

Here, and on "Z", you can always delete your uploaded photos. In both cases, go to your "user control panel", select, "attachments" or "manage attachments" from the sidebar on the left. You are presented with a list of all of your uploads. Select the ones you want to delete by using the checkbox to the right of that attachment, then go to the bottom and select "delete", or "delete selected".
