It seems that summer has started already. Time to unveil the plans for the scratchbuild challenge. As my layout is still without track, but with a fairly clear idea of the trackplan, any trackside structure would be of use, and a generic goods shed can be placed anywhere, so that's the direction I'll head to. Inspired by the 'NW 58th St., Miami' approach of a long, no-frills structure, I found the following structure: http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?tit ... 1008105306 . It could probably be a bit older looking, as I want a branch-line look on my layout instead of a big-city industrial complex look, so I will probably mix in some older style architectural features like on this one: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/1649787 or http://www.weimar-rastenberger-kleinbah ... efnord.jpg . I'll try to draw some blueprints which combine features of these three to give an idea of what is going to be built.
This should be a good one!! Im looking forward to seeing some progress Misngth

The pictures of the structures are good starts Thumbsup
Looks like this one is going to be a good one.
Can't wait for the progress pics.
Should look nice!
Got started with the project, here a wip shot of the long wall with a few wagons as size comparison placed in it's approximate future location on the layout. (layout is still pretty bare-bones) The structure is only one-sided, by the way. The warehouse wall is v-groove styrene with features such as doors and windows. Windows are clear styrene with smaller windowpanes scored in, which seems to look pretty good from a distance, might try inking them for more contrast. Hoping that illuminating some of the windows looks good enough. Have been using the same scoring technique for other structures too, haven't painted them yet, so it is yet to be seen how it will look in the end.

Will continue work in August. One long month should be enough to finish this.
Clear styrene with grooves made for frames...simple and possibly brilliant. I had heard of inking lines on clear plastic before, but grooving them first makes good sense. I did something similar with simulating glass bricks but wasn't overly happy about how it turned out. I'll be looking forward to your progress, especially the windows.

It starts looking like a structure now. Next will be interior detailing and doors, I guess, and after that the roof will be the next big step at some point.

Didn't finish the challenge, but did work a bit on it for a few days.. nothing special, but still.

First the window. Scored the lines into a piece of transparent plastic, painted the windowframe and had ink flow into the recesses giving a nice dirty window look. Thinning the ink could get a cleaner result, I guess.

And then the warehouse proper. The roof hasn't been built yet, haven't found a good looking solution for that yet. Currently there is just a placeholder to indicate where the shadow falls eventually.
