Anybody here belong to Train Orders.com? They look a bit interesting-- what little they will show you before you pay them 32 bucks a year to participate. Now i'm not against helping a site to prosper , but most give you some exposure before making you register, not this one. Is it worth what they are asking?
I don't believe it's worth it. When you pay you get the ability to post threads, search the forums, and view the webcams and full-size photos. Posting threads is a non-issue for me as many of the knowledgeable people there have left over the years. Searching the archives isn't an issue with Google site search. Webcabs are a waste of time for me and most of the photos on there I wouldn't care to see full-size anyway. (The few that I do care about are harvested for me by a friend with an account!) For the money I'd much rather have dead tree media.
From my experience, I agree. It's not worth it, I won't be renewing.

If you want a good railfanning site to check out, check out Railroadfan.com.

Which is really only useful if you live in the southern Great Lakes region...

True, you never know though, it could expand one day if there's enough people...
Thanks, I pretty well figured that would be the answer.
If you are looking for a model railroad site you might want to check out http://www.the-gauge.net I think for the most part it is pretty good. There are a few jerks on it like some guy named Les. Its worth checking out.
Awww, I dunno, I've been there and that Les is a pretty good guy, I think. Smile

Been there myself..ONCE! Never went back because I thought that guy 88fan was a real jerk.
Well yeah! That guy is some piece of work! Goldth
I've been a paid up member for around 5 years, and I'm quite happy with them - living on the right-hand side of the pond, all the photos and info I need from them, and my other forums. Well worth less than 9 cents per day - and I say that as a retiree on a fixed income!
For 1:1 steam railroading, it is pretty much the site. In terms of knowledgeable people, every major rail preservation organization follows TO. They usually don't post, but they do follow it. You will never find a greater collection of people whom really know what is going on, but the standard practice of such people is to sit in the shadows and occasionally comment. If you know some of the major players on the national scene...you'll see them there from time to time. You'll also get some amazing multimedia that isn't available anywhere else.

The only comparable forum I know of is the narrow gauge discussion forum...ngdiscussion.net. If you follow it, and especially if you know the names, you'll find major players from nearly every narrow gauge organization across the country visit there. Many of them are active only there and TO.

Dave, since you like steam, camp out in their steam section for a while. Ross Rowland posts on there. IIRC, some of the Friends of the 4449 are there. Plenty of the 765 crew love to lurk there. And many more.

Edit: An example

Want the reason why things were as they were at Train Festival...or why it wasn't Foamer Festival?

I've met Jason Johnson a couple times. The first time was when I had a cab ride on the Ohio Central with him firing. His post is informative because he was THE organizer/promoter of Train Festival.
