Was looking thorugh some of my old MR mags and was wondering if anybody here has ever had anything published in any magizines or books or something similar. Would be cool to maybe see something from a member.

Well I had three articles published in (approx) 1985 in RMC and 12 articles in the NMRA Bulletin about the same time. Nothing since.

Let's see. A news column and various photos in Trains, a sidebar and various photos in Railpace, and I was on staff for CTC Board for about a year which included a lot of uncredited writing and editing. I'm currently working on feature articles for Passenger Train Journal, Railpace, and The Railroad Press. And I think I had something in The Gauge e-mag once, too.

I never had the honor of having anything publish other then a letter to MR back in the 60s..

I have had a couple of articles published in various club newsletters/websites over the past few years. Nothing in the "mainstream" media though...

Some years back, the editor of Model Railroader, at Trainfest, asked me if I'd consider writing something about my modules. My answer to him was, "If I were a prize winning journalist, or professional photographer, you might have accepted my submissions, in the past. I'm neither, and you won't. So, I guess not."
It was the beginning of the end, for me, with MR.

I was looking at the current Gazette and scratching my head over the feature layout. It is On30 with flex track (so no track work points). The locomotives/rolling stock is all straight-from-the box, no details changed except decals slapped on the tenders. The scenery is not particularly good (nor complete). The trackplan isn't particularly good. Even his trestles (especially the one on the cover) feature corner-cutting construction. My only guess as to why it was published is that the builder has the initials "MMR" after his name...and On30 is in vogue.

Maybe I should submit some construction articles.

Can't hurt to try. One of the problems for the magazines might be a lack of new submisisons. Some seemingly strange stuff shows up in those pages, including layouts custom made by paid professionals.

Many years ago, I participated/subscribed to Alarums and Excursions Fantasy Role Playing Games Fanzine. You get the issue that you submit to for free. I did it for a couple of years, on and off...

Payment for article is a free copy of the issue in which your article appears.

For the first submission, the Editor downloaded low resolution graphics from website instead of using the high resolution camera ready graphics that I included with my submission.

Editor messed up the picture captions.

Editor's spell checker mis-spelled several words.

Article formatting was lousy.

For my second submission, the results weren't much better.

I cancelled my subscription after that.

Josh-JBakko here was published in the second issue of Model Railroad Hobbyist for a review of Sergents couplers.

As one of my local friends (a 2' gauge, prototype modeler)..."we can't complain if we don't submit material". It is still a darn good magazine (possibly the best). I'm going to get together an article, if I can, before Thanksgiving. Maybe the Silverton Railroad's arched-roof combine...or a mid-1870s duckbill coach with custom trucks (perhaps an article on just the trucks?).

I've thought about it - but I think participating on these boards is enough. Besides, I don't need anything else to distract me from actually getting something done

I had my article on painting TH&B geeps appear in Model Railroader's Paint Shop, Feb. 1980, and later got a mention for submitting an EG&E calendar to them - they included a b&w picture of the calendar, which featured this b&w photo:


By the way, those TH&B geeps are still around, although not seeing much service on my 1930s-based layout. I've remotored the 403 and added a similar can motor to the 76, which was originally a dummy. Both units also got new trucks.
