what would you guys think of a pice of rolling stock with my son's info on it and the make a wish logo . here is what i was thinking .
this would travel for 1 year. to everyone's layout how would like to be part of it . with a book to write a little something about the power of a wish and what this rolling stock would add to their lay out while it is their. they would also take a pic of two one to post in a forum i will start. and then they would pass it on to the next person in line.

as for the colors it it would be make a wish blue . with white lettering. as for the scale it would be ho and n scale .their will be 6 cars for each scale.and may be a loco set? they will be numbered. and the end of the 1 year and all cars are back they will go to auction. and all money raised for it will go to make a wish of michigan.

Here is what i was thinking
for each scale
1 loco set power and dummy (non dcc)
2 box
2 coal
2 tanker

if you are thinking on doing this just post here. or if you have any other info just post.
Hi Scooby,

It sounds like a nice idea and tribute to your son. Am I understanding this correctly? You are planning to make the rolling stock and then send it to forum members to photograph on the layout, sort of like Ed's Gauge boxcar of years ago? Making more than one car is ambitious! Were you thinking of sending all the rolling stock to one person at a time? Or were you hoping that more people would participate if there was more than just one car going through the mail? I'd be honored to have such a car travel the rails on my layout and then carefully send it on to the next person.

Ralph
ralph it will be like the gauge box car from years ago.
and as for the cars i was thinking on one car per person minus the loco set that would be both units. 1 power 1 dummy
i thougt i would add more cars then the people that wanted in on this woun't have to wait as long and they could get something else that is why i was adding the coal car and a tanker with the loco set. so one person could get a box car some one else could get a tanker ect, ect, down the list. i would try to make different list one for each car. but i think if it was a random it would make it worth it . i could see about each person getting 1 of each car set at random if that is what everyone wanted. and as for the logo's and my son's name i could put his name on the under side and just the make a wish logo on one side and the forum logo on the other? " logo and layout still on the planning board."

just remember nothing set in stone yet just seeing who all would join in on this to see if i need to make up one set or two sets.
remember they will be in both scales ho and "n scale if the n scalers wanted to join in " .

if you guys have any input on the logos on the cars or any thing post it. don't be shy ........

nothing set to stone yet so things could be changed in the mock up i will due in the next couple of weeks after i get a good idea on what you all would like to see on each side just remember make a wish on one side other side blank and sons info on bottom.
I'd be honored, Scoob...and...I get to double dip as I have both an N and an HO layout. I would suggest that the adventures be put in a photo album so that it can be auctioned with the sets.
If I may.... I'd like to add another dimension to this. Donations...

I only have HO now and it's only the shelf layout, but It's still worth it to me to have an HO car. Smile Scooby; Contact eightyeightfan1 to see how he did the logistics of the original car.

If anyone wants to. If you receive a car, if you or anyone in your family or friends want to donate a dollar or 2 to Make-a-wish, use the donate button at the bottom of the page and mark your donation "Make a Wish" and I'll forward the money to scoobylovin to donate in memory of his son...

Does that sound good?????
This all sounds like a great idea! And if you lost him, my deepest condolences. I'd be honored to take a picture of it on my layout. Maybe you could even include an envelope or something, so we can all print up a picture of the car(s) on our layouts. That may not work so well though.
thanks ngauger. i will give him a buzz to go over things. and that sounds like a great idea on the button.

viperman my son passed away in 2006 after a long battle with a disease called canavan's . here is a little about him for the new members as all the old timers can remember"and this might bringa tear to their eye as it does mine as i write this.

my sons was born on November 29 2001 he was a healthy little boy in Jan of 2002 we started to notice things were not just right and in feb 2002 he was in the hospital and for 15 days they did test after test and in April of 2002 we got the all the tests back and the news that no parent wants to hear we where told that our son has a disease called canavan's we where told to take him home and love him as their is little to do for this disease.keegen was in and out of the hospital due to his disease.well in 2005 make a wish gave keegen his wish to go to Disney world in fl to go meet bear in the big blue house. and in oct of 2005 keegen fell sick and was in the hospital once again. well this time was different he stored eating so we had a feeding tube put in. and that is where he went down hill. 24 hrs after the surgery he started to swell and swell in his tummy the dr's couldn't find out why. he got to 88cm around and with all the test they where doing they couldn't find the problem. so they took him back to surgery this is now 4 days after the first one. they gave him a 0.01% chance for making it off the table. well 9 hours later he was out and doing good. and 15 days later he was back in surgery for more tummy sugery. and 3 times more after that. he spent the next 5 months in the hospital in the i.c.u 25 miles from home.and with all this going on we where getting ready for our 4th child. well in feb 2006 he came home and was doing very well then in march his disease showed back in force and off to the hospital . he spent another month in the i.c.u and at that time we talked and made him d.n.r and brought him home under hospice. and in june his little brother was born. and keegen started to go down hill again. he was able to hold his little once and we got the pics of it. and on july 1st 2006 he passed away at home with his family.

For info on what my son had read next post
Canavan disease, also called Canavan-Van Bogaert-Bertrand disease, aspartoacylase deficiency or aminoacylase 2 deficiency,[1] is an autosomal recessive[2] degenerative disorder that causes progressive damage to nerve cells in the brain. This disease is one of a group of genetic disorders called leukodystrophies.

Leukodystrophies are characterized by degeneration of myelin in the phospholipid layer insulating the axon of a neuron. The gene associated with the disorder is located on human chromosome 17.

Prevalence
Although Canavan disease may occur in any ethnic group, it affects persons of Eastern European Jewish ancestry more frequently. About 1/40 individuals of Eastern European (Ashkenazi) Jewish ancestry are carriers.

Pathophysiology
Canavan disease has an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance.

Canavan disease is inherited in an autosomal recessive fashion. When both parents are carriers, there is a 25% chance of having an affected child. Genetic counseling and genetic testing is recommended for families with two parental carriers.

Canavan disease is caused by a defective ASPA gene which is responsible for the production of the enzyme aspartoacylase. This enzyme breaks down the concentrated brain molecule N-acetyl aspartate. Decreased aspartoacylase activity prevents the normal breakdown of N-acetyl aspartate, and the lack of breakdown somehow interferes with growth of the myelin sheath of the nerve fibers in the brain. The myelin sheath is the fatty covering that surrounds nerve cells and acts as an insulator, which allows for efficient transmission of nerve impulses.

Symptoms
Symptoms of Canavan disease, which appear in early infancy and progress rapidly, may include mental retardation, loss of previously acquired motor skills, feeding difficulties, loss of speach. abnormal muscle tone (i.e., floppiness or stiffness), poor head control, and megalocephaly (abnormally enlarged head). Paralysis,Seizures, blindness, even a vagatative state.and the loss of the ability to fight off illness. the Backflow of food material into the nose (nasal regurgitation),reflux with vomiting.

Treatment
There is no cure for Canavan disease, nor is there a standard course of treatment. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.

Prognosis
Death usually occurs before 18 months but not most at age 4 . Some children may survive into their teens and a few into their twenties via newer gene therapy treatments which have extended their life expectancy. In some cases, this helps to temporarily stop the progression of the disease.
Scooby..I too would be honored to participate in this project. Just let us know what aid you may need from us to get it rollin'...
Scooby that is a very moving story and I would certainly be more than happy to give the train a photographic tour of my layout up here in canada.
Breaks my heart to read that, especially since I have a 5yr old son of my own, and a 5mo old too
Scooby, as one of the "old timers" who lived this sadness with you as you shared your experience with us on the Gauge, I would be honored to be part of your idea.
